Meet Art Karts Huseonica | Arizonian Explorer and Adventurer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Art Karts Huseonica and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Art Karts, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Because I go on dangerous adventures and expeditions, I am acutely aware of risk management. I have honed my skills to be self-confident but I know when to back off and reassess my current situation. For example, is the river too dangerous to proceed or should I wait until the wind slacks off. I am not afraid to rely on other sources to establish a benchmark of safety, especially in a region of the world that I’m not completely familiar with. Modesty or bashfulness has no place in assessing my current situation. I want to live life on the edge, but not fall off of it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am retired U.S. Navy, retired associate professor, and an active adventurer. Ever since I was ten years old, I have been going on adventures, with friends or solo. But I seem to have my greatest success when soloing, not having to deal with other people’s drama. Although retired, I’m not retired from living. In fact, I’m afraid of growing old and dying. So I live life to the fullest. While my professional careers frequently got in the way of my adventures, I fitted in wilderness excitement at every opportunity. Now, it’s a full-time ambition, or maybe better said, my passion for living and adventuring.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My visitors inevitably want to visit the Grand Canyon, here in Arizona. In fact, I have taken several on a Rim-to-Rim hike of the Grand Canyon. A three-day adventure that includes a very steep decent and challenging ascent. We will cowboy camp two nights without tents, We cooked our meals over a small mountain stove, purified our water from small streams and springs, and left only our footprints. Hiking from the South Rim to the North Rim tests a person’s physical and mental capabilities. Plus, it leaves in in awe of our beautiful southwest.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Most significant in my life has been my wife Karen Carlsen Huseonica. She has been the catalyst for pushing me to do more things, helping to ensure my safety, and refining my goals and objectives. I consider her my manager and my accountant. Probably, most important, she’s a great friend.
