We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Wong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Most creative people dream of starting their own production company and that was one of my goals as well. However, I also want to create a team that is female, LGBTQ, and minority led. The film/video industry is a male dominated one and I believe we offer a different perspective towards it, while also producing content at the highest level. I’ve faced sexism and discrimination on big and small levels and I absolutely want to have a team/company culture that is none of those things.
I’m extremely proud of the companies that chose to work with me – huge shout out to STM Goods, Element Cases and local favorite, Soapy Joes – and cannot wait to expand my company so I can hire more people and make awesome content together!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have over 10 years of commercial content experience in the San Diego area. One of my goals is to get back into documentary work that shares women, LGBTQ, and/or minority stories. In 2012, I directed Prizefighter which is a 36- minute, verite-style documentary about Heather “the Heat” Hardy, a single mom/amateur boxer who wanted to turn pro.
Putting it out there for the Universe – it’s been 10 years since that film was produced. It would be amazing to do a follow-up short film on Heather – 10 years later! Her life has changed so much – from turning professional, having live fights on pay-per-view and her daughter growing up and going to college. Heather is such a sweetheart and it would be fascinating to see how things have changed since Prizefighter. (So if you want executive producer credit – hit your girl up! There are so many great stories out there – it’s a matter of finding them and funding the projects.)
More recently, I’ve had the pleasure of working on a feature-length documentary, Almost Home, as a producer/editor/
I’ve also produced a short documentary on local coffee roasters, Coatl Coffee, called In Search of Balance. It’s a blend commercial and documentary-style work. I’m hoping it will get into a few short film festivals – fingers crossed.
I’ve also started to volunteer my media skills to the North County LGBTQ Resource Center. They do incredible work with all ages in the LGBTQ community and if you are keen to donate to a local non-profit – be sure to check them out!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Convoy, Hillcrest and North Park are my go-to areas! There’s so many great mom and pop shops and local bars and restaurants.
52 Remedies is always a crowd pleaser! And Mignon Pho is my favorite for bone marrow pho.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d give a shout out to Shawn Lennon. He’s a retired tv producer and he’s always supported me as a creative and as a friend!
