We had the good fortune of connecting with Alisa Pospekhova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alisa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve struggled with asthma and auto-immune issues my whole life and finally, in my thirties, started working with a holistic practitioner to solve underlying immune and inflammation issues. Taking all of these incredible adaptogens and herbs, I felt the transformative effects and was starting to feel so much better.
I started telling everyone about them, but the problem was that most supplements were quite bitter or inconvenient to take, so my friends were hesitant to try them.
At the same time, I was traveling a lot for work, so the same powders and tinctures became annoying for me to take with me a as well, so that is where the idea of crating a new type of supplement – one that would be nurturing but also convenient and delicious.
Since I couldn’t find anything like that on the market, I decided to make it myself.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the founder and CEO of kindroot – a wellness and supplement brand on a mission to make herbs and vitamins more accessible and understandable. I formulated and designed the product, launched the brand and I manage all the day to day operations.
Prior to kindroot, I spent over 15 years in brand marketing, having led global marketing at Nestle, The Wonderful Company, Manduka Yoga and Unilever Prestige.
I absolutely loved my career in marketing and being able to use my creativity to bring healthier options to the consumers and my experiences also taught me how to run a business and how the world works, but ultimately I was searching for a way to be in control of my own strategic vision and creativity, so it made sense for me to go on my own and launch my own brand.
Although entrepreneurial journey is difficult, I cherish all the experiences – whether positive and negative and truly appreciate every moment of building something that is my own.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live just outside of Los Angeles and I love the health and wellness environemnt that is this city!
I always take everyone to Erewhon – a local natural grocery chain that has become a culture icon and a destination staple, they were also one of the first retailers to take on kindroot, so I am forever grateful to them. There are 6 locations across LA, so you can always find near you. Their smoothie bar is incredible and they have different monthly collaborations, so it is a good place to start.
Gracias Madre in WeHo is a must for incredible vegetarian food and great cocktails and you leave feeling healthier than when you came in.
We also have many yoga and meditation studios and I find that fitting in a class is always a good idea during travel to re-center oneself, so if they are up for it, I always take my guests to one of them during their stay.
Of course you have to check out the beaches, in my opinion, going south to Corona Del Mar, Encinitas or La Jolla is where you experience the pretties coastline and authentic surf culture and it is also worthwhile to pop by Laguna Beach and check out the local art scene.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of the things I was surprised by the most on my entrepreneurial journey is how robust and supportive the female entrepreneur community is.
Over the past year these women have become my source of advice, support and inspiration and dedicate a huge part of my success to them.
In particular, I am so grateful to have Kara Froula from BackEmbrace and Maria Karr from Rumore Beauty in my circle of friends.
