Meet Alex Kosinski | Personal Trainer & Nutrition Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Kosinski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, how do you think about risk?
I am a BIG risk taker. To me, taking a risk is walking the path less traveled. It’s attempting something new, perhaps a bit frightening, or doing something that others doubt we can accomplish.
Since a young age, I have always lived my life with no fear of taking risks. For example, when I was a freshman in high school, I had a dream to play college football. That was risky. No one from my high school had earned D1A (Power 5) football scholarship in over 10+ years coming directly from high school. I had to gain 100lbs to be the size for my position (Offensive Line), and perform incredibly well on the football field. I also had to recruit myself, since my high school was not recruited for football at the time. Many people said it was a big risk and that I had no shot. However, I made that happen. I played 4 years of football at the University of Arizona and graduated with no student debt. That risk paid off.
I have and continually will take risks in my life and in my career. People have described me as bold, brave and fearless. To me, the worst thing that can happen from taking a risk is failure. The true beauty of failure is that every time I fail, I learn something. So through failure, although something may have been lost, what’s gained (wisdom), is invaluable.
Today, I wake up every day and I am taking a risk. I decided to walk the entrepreneur path, having started my own personal training business. Although I have over 5 years of experience doing personal training, this is the first time I am full time with it. The learning curve is strong and the challenges are new. However, I continually get better every day, and find beauty in the struggle.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a personal training business in San Diego. I do in-person fitness training, as well as online training/coaching. With every client I also do truly customized nutrition plans as well. I specialize in weight management and athlete training.
What sets me apart from others is that very few trainers have the life experiences I have had. For example, I lost 115 lbs of body fat. I went from weighing 320 lbs to 205 lbs and 6-pack abs. Many trainers can only teach you about weight loss, but few to none have LIVED it the way I have.
I know what it feels like to be uncomfortable with what you see in the mirror, because I used to HATE having my shirt off. I went from being afraid to be in a photo shirtless, to doing paid modeling shoots. People used to laugh at my appearance due to my excess body fat, now people compliment me regularly (which I am still getting used to)!
I have lived the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of proper fitness and nutrition. That is why I have a passion for helping others achieve the same.
The reason I love doing what I do is that I am a results-oriented trainer. I always be sure to set clear, trackable goals with my clients. To me, there is no better feeling than watching my clients see the results they are looking for. If I can help someone feel more comfortable in their skin, or accomplish something they previously thought impossible, that puts a big smile on my face.
I want the world to know that I do this because I love it. I love making healthier, happier humans. I do not preach supplements or short-cuts. I preach hard work and proper nutrition. I believe that if people are willing to work as hard for themselves (physically) as they currently do for their boss, we can be a much healthier country.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the beach! I am still new to town, but I know the sun sets in the west. So any beach is a great place to spend the day here in San Diego. My advice is head to the ocean and take it easy.
Ocean beach is fun for people watching, Pacific Beach as well. The Mexican food here is incredible. So far my favorite spots are The Taco Stand and Nico’s Taco Shop (I go there for breakfast burritos).
There are also tons of fun places to golf, hike, surf, swim, and enjoy the beautiful weather! If you are outside in this Zip Code, you’ll surely enjoy the day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents! They have always been my rock, my support and my hardest critics (in a good way).
My mom is the best mom in the world. We have an astonishing amount in common, she challenges me in the right ways and has always been there for me. Whether it be at my highest high, or lowest low, my mom has always been my #1 fan.
My dad is a great man and a great example of what I hope to be one day to my future children. He is a great role model of how to work incredibly hard and always treat others with respect.
