We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by community — by the imperfection of community. There is something so beautiful to me about all the different folks who coexist together in a space and how that affects that space — what it looks like, what it sounds, smells, and feels like. It’s inspiring to me to see different communities exist and thrive, most of the time in spite of so many different things.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For a little over a month now I have been providing film developing and scanning services to both the local film community and film photographers all over. Here, I handle their film developing needs from start to finish — I intake rolls daily, then process the rolls and provide high resolution scan uploads of the photos. I am still very new to developing for others, so there have been a lot of learning curves, but overall I am so grateful so many people have trusted me with their film.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spots in the city are the smaller, “hole in the wall” or family/community owned spots. If someone was visiting for the first time, I would want them to know about the real San Diego, so I would take them to places like Chicano Park, Southeast, and any of the Berto taco shops.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely want to shoutout Jenessa Marquez and I’m Still Developing as a collective, as they were really my first entryway into the film community here in San Diego. I also want to shoutout Xavie Garcia of SD Walkabouts because through our photo walks together I was also introduced to so many talented photographers. Oscar Cruz also needs a shoutout because his work really inspires me. Also, shoutout to all the women photographers here in San Diego — keep going!
