We had the good fortune of connecting with Ale Po and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ale, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The simple fact that you CAN make a living out of art. Being an artist is sometimes overlooked, mainly because you are perceived to not having a good enough title/income such as a Doctor or a lawyer etc. Growing up I never heard of teachers or peers guiding and cheering you on to becoming an artist, simply because of the taboo of being a hungry artist. In fact, sometimes a single piece of art can be the equivalent, if not more, of a 40 hour paycheck, done in less that 5 hours. Work smarter not harder, right?? So I guess outsiders are unaware that in the art world there is a lot of money to be made.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Art can be defined in multiple ways, the easiest way I can explain it is you gotta feel it. It’s not just painting with your hand, it’s a full body experience. The connection between your thoughts, emotions & finally body is what truly gives that authentic result.
Perhaps something that sets me apart is my attention to detail, not necessarily clinging to a specific niche but exploring different forms of “canvas.” It’s very liberating when you allow yourself to expand and keep being creative & being okay with whatever the outcome might be.
It was definitely not easy to get to where I am today, I’m still learning & I’m very grateful to be where I am. It can still be intimating wandering unknown waters but every step is a lesson learned! I’m so proud of myself for betting on myself. It’s nerve racking to make such a decision when you’ mainly see your friends & family working for large companies & getting a steady paycheck. Nonetheless the liberty and happiness derived from that single decision is priceless.
I have a background in art, graduated with a BA in Psychology and Art. My initial idea was to become an art therapist, but due to covid that never occurred & so after many attempts I decided to started my art business midst covid! (Crazy right!) it’s been such a crazy journey, love every step of the way but definitely if I can give one piece of advice is to always listen, you can always learn something from others and apply it your way. Don’t sell yourself short to meet others standards, there will always be a better opportunity! Also, take lots of deep breaths!
One thing I’d like for people to know is that AlePo Art is supposed to invoke some type of thought or emotion. The meaning may be different to each beholder but the point is to go deeper that what the eye meets.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to thank Zahid for always being my #1 supporter & fan. Regardless of what obstacles I encounter he is always there to offer guidance or a hi 5! Also, a huge shout out to Erika Williams for continuously showing examples of how setting goals is the way to achieve your dreams!
