Meet Alcira Anguiano | Newborn, Child, and Family Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alcira Anguiano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alcira, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I decided I wanted to pursue photography full time after my children were born. Prior to being a photographer I was happily married and working as an elementary school teacher. When I became pregnant, with my first child, I became obsessed with planning photoshoots. I wanted to capture every moment, milestone, holiday, etc. After my son was born I decided to end the school year and take some time off to be with him. I continued photographing him and creating sets every month. What started as a hobby slowly started growing. Soon I had two boys under two and I decided I didn’t want to go back to work and miss out on being with them. Fortunately my passion for photography started getting noticed and I realized there was potential in making it a career. Being a photographer would allow me to work around my childrens busy schedule and not miss out on being away from them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the photographer behind AHA Photography. I specialize in photographing newborns, children, and families. I love photographing a baby’s first year. Babies grow so much their first year, it goes by so fast, therefore I am always grateful that parents trust me to capture their first milestones.
I started photographing my son eight years ago. I realized very early on that the camera I had wasn’t going to produce the images I wanted. I slowly started learning by watching lots of YouTube videos. Once I started making some money I started taking online workshops to learn things such as proper exposure and Photoshop. Once I really decided I was going to make the switch I invested in in person workshops to master/perfect my photography. Everyday and session is a learning experience. To remain relevant I know that I have be a lifelong learner and strive to always grow.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My children are the reason why I took on photography and my main inspiration. Although they inspire me and bring out the best in me, I know I wouldn’t have been able to launch my photography career without the support of my family. My husband has always supported every crazy idea of mine. When I mentioned I wanted to pursue photography he cheered me on. He encourages and assists me. He built my first props and continues helping with setting up my studio space. My siblings are my cheerleaders and were my first clients too. My sister, Esther, helped me from day 1. She was my first assistant and even allowed me to use her home to hold sessions out of. My mother, is the person responsible for all of my achievements. She was a single mother who worked all sorts of jobs to help raise us. She taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. I am so grateful for my family and their support.
