Meet Adesola Akindele | Author, Inventor, Marketing Strategist, Social Innovator, Startup Consultant and Mental Health Advocate for Founders

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adesola Akindele and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adesola, how do you think about risk?
Reflecting on my 23-year entrepreneurial journey, it’s clear that risk-taking has been a cornerstone of my growth and success. As a serial entrepreneur with a diverse portfolio spanning continents and industries, I’ve come to appreciate the transformative power of calculated risks.
Identifying unique business and social impact opportunities worldwide has been both challenging and rewarding. Each venture presented a chance to push boundaries and explore uncharted territories, ultimately leading to multiple successful exits. These experiences have underscored that risk, when approached strategically, is a catalyst for substantial rewards.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, I serve as the CEO of HyGear Technologies and am the Founder of Equilibrium Startup Lab. What distinguishes me is not just my roles but the unique lens through which I approach challenges and perceive the world. As an optimist, I analyze situations methodically, considering all perspectives before drawing conclusions. My identity as an avid researcher and futurist underscores my commitment to leveraging insights from the past to devise solutions that resonate not only in the present but also in shaping a better future.
A fundamental belief of mine is that for global improvement, cultivating emotional intelligence is imperative. I see strength in diversity and harness it to formulate equitable solutions, particularly for underserved groups, recognizing that their success ultimately benefits society as a whole.
The path to my current position was far from easy. Tenacity and resilience defined my journey, as I encountered failures but consistently rose each time. Early on, I learned to confront fear and, over the past decade, embraced self-awareness. Understanding and accepting myself authentically was transformative, fostering mental health and maintaining a trajectory of peace and acceptance.
Facing oneself is the most challenging aspect of personal growth. Overcoming this hurdle involved honesty, accountability, and shedding self-sabotaging behaviours, even if they once provided comfort. Navigating through challenges required a focus on what I could control, acknowledging when to seek help promptly, and understanding the power of reaction in shaping both personal and professional outcomes.
Throughout this journey, I’ve internalized the importance of recognizing one’s worth and refusing to accept discounts, whether in life or business. Saying no, maintaining mindfulness against distractions, and aligning actions with core values have been key principles.
My story encapsulates the good, the terrible, and the ugly, affirming that individuals control the narrative of their lives. The world can learn that despite adversities, creating a compelling future begins with seizing control of one’s narrative. In essence, the best way to predict the future is to actively participate in its creation.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a fervent admirer of nature, our itinerary is bound to be filled with outdoor escapades in San Diego. Picture invigorating hikes amidst the breathtaking landscape of Torrey Pines or a serene camping experience near Whispering Oaks. Thrills await at Belmont Park, and for a cozy evening, we’ll rent a firepit at Coronado Hotel Beach Front, embracing the warmth of a beachside gathering. Culinary adventures beckon on Convoy, offering a plethora of gastronomic delights.
A day at Balboa Park is on the agenda, featuring a visit to the Japanese Friendship Garden and a leisurely picnic on the lush lawns. Sunset Cliffs will be a non-negotiable stop, followed by a delightful evening at Shakespeare Pub for a pint or two.
For an adrenaline rush, we’ll embark on a day at Lake Murray, paddling on its tranquil waters, and later, experience the thrill of indoor skydiving at iFly Mission Valley, perhaps preceded by a bit of shopping. As the day winds down, indulge in Happy Hour delights at Café Sevilla or Savoie in Chula, and satisfy your sweet tooth at Hans and Harry’s, Handels, The French Gourmet, or venture to Julian for an exceptional slice of apple pie.
To add a touch of serenity, we’ll incorporate yoga sessions on the beach or in a peaceful park setting. This curated blend of outdoor adventures, culinary delights, and moments of tranquility promises an unforgettable San Diego experience.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation of the incredible individuals and organizations that have been instrumental in supporting me during my transformative 8-year journey in the United States. Foremost, I extend my gratitude to my family and tribe for their unwavering support.
Acknowledging the pivotal role played by the Small Business Development Centre (SBDC), I am indebted to them for setting me on the right trajectory when establishing my business in California. The Regional Entrepreneurship Centre at Miramar College has been a constant ally since its inception, providing me with invaluable speaking engagements and mentorship opportunities.
A special mention goes to the advisors at the Brink at USD, whose guidance has steered HyGear towards our next phase of development. The Kroc School at the University of San Diego deserves recognition for involving me in a committee supporting their Global Innovation Challenge, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.
In my journey, Village Up stands out for creating a safe space where founders can openly discuss mental health, an often overlooked aspect of entrepreneurship. Tanya Hertz has been a champion and source of inspiration since our first meeting, while Taryell Simmons played a crucial role in helping me navigate the intricate San Diego ecosystem.
Last but not least, I extend my deepest appreciation to my business partner, London Noble and our mentor at HyGear Technologies, Donna Auguste, whose unwavering encouragement has been a driving force in our perseverance. Each of these entities and individuals has contributed significantly to my growth and success, and for that, I am profoundly grateful.
