We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaron Null and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aaron, what do you attribute your success to?
I think the most important factor behind success is doing what you truly love, connecting with people through that, and then just doing excellent work!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my career in film editing, but quickly realized spending my life in a cave pouring over footage wasn’t right for me. I still love film, but I needed to pivot to something with more engagement with people and varied creativity day to day. So I retrained myself in graphic design, and I slowly built my business Vervor Design over the past 10 years here in San Diego. This past year in looking for some upgraded office space I found a beautiful spot with lots of potential on the north side of Ocean Beach. I decided to make a leap and combine my design studio with a retail space where I could host local art, jewelry, curios, and plants to give Voltaire and the north side of OB a much needed spot to stop in, rub elbows with neighbors, and find some one of a kind pieces! Over the years learning how to communicate, understand, and deliver work that my design clients love, I’ve developed my personal style and grown much more confident running a business, understanding my audience, and not being afraid to take risks. All these lessons came into play in opening the retail space. I leaned on my gut instinct and created a space that is truly unique but well informed by my connections in the community, design trends, and what I see is missing in the OB shopping experience. I’ve enjoyed the process of putting the work in and seeing people come out of the woodwork who are experts in areas where I need help or a point in the right direction. Its funny how the universe truly works in your favor when you take risks aligned with your passion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love this city and showing someone a good time, so here goes! We would drive out to Julian and into Anza Borrego to hike a slot canyon, camp in the desert, and then hit Julian for lunch the next day. An afternoon hike up Garnet Peak to look back into the desert and then another hike up Stonewall Peak to see Cuyamaca Rancho and the old fire damage and the view back towards the ocean. Then a drive into San Diego up to Mira Mesa to skip around to some breweries. The next day we would take a fishing boat out in the morning and see what we can snag. In the afternoon back to Point Loma to check out the view of the city from Cabrillo National Monument, the tide pools, and an evening in OB on Newport enjoying the one of a kind OB vibe. We’d spend another day wandering Balboa Park in the morning and then heading up through Hillcrest and North Park on foot just stopping into shops and breweries etc. On another day we’d head to Mexico to check out TJ and Rosarito. Another day we’d head north to Swami’s, the Self Realization Center, and over to Stone Brewing. Back in the evening for a night out in Little Italy enjoying the atmosphere and killer food.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my big group of friends who are so weird, wild, and inspiring that we can always count on someone with the right passion or expertise to step forward and support the group when the need arising. I feel blessed to be surrounded by so many talented and engaged people in my life.
