We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Loizides and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emma, so let’s start with how you started?
The first painting I ever sold was in 2004. I found a competition online and decided to go for it! It was a little Gallery in the middle of nowhere in the English countryside, and the theme was Village life. I finished my painting drove about 3 hours to deliver it to the gallery, getting lost along the way. When I arrived they said it was too big to enter the competition…I was so dissappounted but thankfully they let me hang it in the gallery anyway. Two weeks later I called the gallery to see what time I could come to collect my work, dreading that long drive again. They said no need it’s sold and we’ll send the check in the post. It was a great feeling that inspired me to enter more open exhibitions over the coming years.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been painting and showing my work for around 15 years and am greatful to have shown my work in the USA and England. It hasn’t always been easy as I’ve build up my art business whilst also working a corporate job – it’s taken time! I create oil and mixed media paintings of cityscapes and street scenes using a vibrant palette. My style brings together realism, pop art and landscape, which I interchange to convey that which inspires me; the untainted setting of the sky and sunsets with its own distinct architecture and ethnography. Painting is exciting experience for me and often my way of relaxing. I love the early stages of a painting when I have a blank canvas and a new idea ready to start. I love that the process of creating enables me to be carried away and switches my mind off from everything else. Having always lived in the city, I’m inspired by architecture and the subject of my work is often the city skyline and peaceful street scenes sprinkled with colour. I feel inspired and want to re-create the atmosphere with paint. I mostly use oils however I get excited about experimenting with new mediums such as collage, gilding and resin. I’ve tried to create happy uplifting works to give people a pause from the hectic city life.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
My favourite spots in San Diego is La Jolla, I like to get an ice cream in Haagan Daaz and take a nice long walk along the coast admire the towering palm trees. I love to do a little shopping and definitely check out all the art Murals.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout to my husband Adriano for always supporting my art, helping me with exhibitions, bringing me coffee when I’ve been freezing at an outdoor art fair, putting up with my paint all over the house (and furniture) and most or all for building me the BEST studio in the garden.
