We had the good fortune of connecting with Bonnie Weiss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bonnie, what makes you most proud of the business you’ve built?
The thing I’m most proud of about The Family & Learning Center is the positive impact we have on students and their families. Most of our students come to us after experiencing significant struggle in school. They are defeated and discouraged. Their parents are overwhelmed and don’t know what to do. By meeting the student at their skill level and utilizing instructional methods and strategies that fit with the student’s learning profile, we’re able to build their skills and help them experience success as a learner. The more success they experience, the more their confidence begins to grow. When I think back to all of the lives we’ve impacted in the last twenty years, it makes me extremely proud and grateful to have been a part of each of these student’s lives.
What should our readers know about your business?
From the time I was in third grade, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. As i got older, my passion for science grew as well. I attended UCSD and earned a degree in Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution, planning to combine my love for science and teaching in whatever career I pursued. After graduating, I applied to work as an Educational Coach at The Family & Learning Center. Little did I know this would shape my future career and life. I loved working with struggling students in a one-on-one setting, where I could truly customize the learning experience for each student. I loved watching each student’s confidence grow and their grades improve. I also enjoyed learning about the business aspect of the center. The owner saw my passion and mentored me as I went back to school for my Master’s in Educational and post-graduate work in Educational Therapy. In 2005, I bought The Family & Learning Center from the founder, and it is going strong almost twenty years later. We continue to provide individualized, one-on-one support to students with learning and attention challenges.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love San Diego, and I enjoy seeing it all. One of my favorite things to do is take the Trolley Tour around San Diego, so we can stop and explore many of the wonderful communities around San Diego all in one day. We’d have lunch in Sea Port Village, ice cream in Coronado while exploring Hotel Del, and see the beautiful coastal scenery of La Jolla.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success has been supported by many people. First and foremost, my parents who have encouraged and supported my goals and helped shape me into the person I am today. They owned a business when I was growing up, and I am grateful for everything I learned watching them run their business, as well as the guidance they continue to provide me as a business owner. I also have to thank the founder of The Family & Learning Center, for starting me off on my career, mentoring me, and having confidence in me to take over her business. Lastly, I thank my husband for his ongoing love and support. It isn’t always easy to be married to a small business owner!
