We had the good fortune of connecting with Solomon Lewis III and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Solomon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that risk is a constant thing to be considered in both your life and career; whether you’re out on an adventure or growing your business, there are various levels of risk to be examined. It is important to try and always consider the risk involved in each thing, but not to limit yourself because of it. I think about risk as a key component of success, it’s hard to be successful without pushing the limits a little, and innovation requires a lot of risks. The unknowns of life aren’t something to be feared but to be discovered; throughout my career as an independent photographer, I have found myself taking small risks quite often. While risk is something I don’t fear, I would say straying away from unnecessary risk has been important for my career. Overall, I think it’s important to balance the risk you take and to discover what risks are necessary for you to grow.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in nature photography, and primarily try to focus on capturing unique landscapes that evoke some level of emotion from the viewer. I’m really excited about this upcoming year, 2022 was such an eventful year for me, and I can’t wait to see what’s to come in the future! I feel like something that sets me apart from others is my way of making a story through my work; generally I write three-part series and post them on my social media. With each series I try to educate my followers about the subject matter or describe my perspective of the world I captured. It took quite a few years of studying and practices to get to where I am now, and I am definitely not done learning about photography. Overall, I found the learning process to be easy, but only because I enjoyed learning about the subject matter. One of the core lessons I learned was not to be afraid of failure; and that avoiding it will keep you from being able to grow.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To start everyday, I’d like to head to downtown San Diego and take them for a cup of coffee at Blue Bottle Coffee. They have some of my all time favorite coffee, and their barista’s really care about your experience! Then we’d walk to the “The Taco Stand” for lunch or dinner. On the next day, I would take them to La Jolla Cove for brunch at the Brockton Villa, the setting is truly a beautiful experience! There are stores around that area, so we’d probably spend the rest of the day in La Jolla. Another fun thing to do the next day would be to see the San Diego Zoo; it is massive, with so much to see it is hard to finish walking it all in one day. The Old Town Trolley tour service they have is another neat thing about San Diego. It takes you through the whole city and over the bridge to Coronado island.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person(s) I want to dedicate my shoutout to are my loving parents. Without these strong role models in my life I would not be where I am today. They helped support my dreams of becoming a professional photographer, and inspired me to travel the world with their stories. With them at my back, my ship will never cease to sail. I love you both dearly, and I truly appreciate all of the lessons you taught me over the years!
