We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr Maddie Wallace and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr Maddie, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Most people don’t understand the intention of chiropractic care. Chiropractic is about enhancing the function of the nervous system, not just treating pain.

Chiropractic as a profession has been pigeon-holed into dealing mainly with back and neck pain. This is a huge shame because it overlooks the incredible power of chiropractic to help someone really heal on a deeper level. In reality, what we learn in school is how to eliminate misalignments in the spine that are causing interference to the nervous system. The nervous system is the master control system of the body, so once we restore proper functioning of the nervous system the body can function at a much higher level.

Chiropractic helps with things such as asthma, digestion, migraines, sleep, balance, performance, mood, focus, and so much more. I specialize in working with babies, which of course has nothing to do with back pain. I help remove interferences in a babies’ system so that they can feed, sleep, grow and develop more optimally.

There are studies being done currently that show the positive effect of chiropractic care on heart rate variability (HRV). Hopefully once those become more widespread the lense through which most people see chiropractic will shift from one of back pain to one of overall wellness and optimal health.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a family-oriented chiropractic practice in the heart of La Jolla Village. I specialize in prenatal and pediatric care which means I see lots of pregnant mamas, babies and kiddos. I also love to serve the busy entrepreneurs of La Jolla, the young professionals, the gym goers, the retired athletes, the parents, the teachers and everyone in between! I spend quality time with each of my practice members and aim to create a soothing, welcoming environment.

I became a business owner through divine intervention. I had set the intention of working in La Jolla but was not sure about having my own business. I found a wonderful chiropractor, the previous owner of my practice, who I was eager to work with. However, life had other plans. The pandemic hit and through a turn of events the previous chiropractor decided to move across country. I ended up taking over the practice and making it my own. I was terrified of going out on my own but I knew that this was a golden opportunity that I could not pass up. I am so grateful I took the leap of faith and ended up where I am now.

Some of the lessons I have learned along the way are to go after what you want and trust the process! Often times things come together in ways you weren’t expecting. Be open to the uncertainty and have faith in the synchronicities.
Also, make sure you have support. Community is key. Lastly, starting, running and growing a business is hard work, but don’t forget to relax, play and take time off. Taking care of yourself, physically and mentally, will help you be a better business owner. Don’t feel bad for prioritizing yourself over your business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am obsessed with the ocean so we would spend a good amount of time exploring different coastal areas. I love grabbing a blanket and a bottle of wine and watching the sunset on the beach. La Jolla is a must because of all the great food, cute boutiques and amazing views. I also always love to take people on the Torrey Pines hike. Paddle boarding in the bay, having a beach day, going for a long bike ride or kayaking in the cove are fun adventures too!

I also enjoy showing my out of town friends the beauty of Balboa Park and spending an afternoon at Kate Sessions Park. And, of course, taking them to some of my favorite restaurants. We would definitely get Italian food in Little Italy and visit my favorite wine shop down there, Vino Carte. We would have to get burritos from Royal Rooster in Mission Bay and possibly visit Old Town for the margaritas. One of my favorite sushi spots is in Bankers Hill. I also love to use visitors as an excuse to check out new places I have been wanting to try! I always have a running list on my phone of restaurants I want to visit.

I am a San Diego native and there is a reason I ended up back here! San Diego is such a fun, accessible, interactive city. There is virtually always something to do and the weather is usually lovely. I love to travel, and I love to come home to SD haha

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My amazing fiancé is my #1 fan and go-to person for support and encouragement. I cannot thank him enough for all he does for me. My life & business coach, Dani Kenney, has been by my side and helped me grow from a wide-eyed chiropractic student to a now business owner. I owe a lot of my success to her guidance and mentorship. I would also like to thank the good friends I made in chiropractic school, all my friends who have watched me grow over the years and my loving family.
