Meet James Rauff | Writer and Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with James Rauff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think what has lead to the modicum of success my brand has had is the unique medium in which I use. That is what seems to resonate the most. I hear it a lot, “ I’ve never seen anyone use these older cameras like this.” I think it connects with a certain demographic more. People around my age that used these older digital cameras on a lot, Particularly in their younger trips and journeys in life . I think seeing them in a cool revived form connects them to that time in their lives and those memories. So it kinda boarders on creative nostalgia . And who does love them some nostalgia?!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what I’m most proud of is seeing my book on the shelves next to children’s books I used to read growing up. It’s has gotten into some pretty great places and I feel it’s a great way to send a message and connect with people via Art. I love it when someone far away reaches out to me that has came across my art to see how it ended up there and how it impacted them. I wouldn’t say Art is every that easy. Many people won’t get it, most times you are playing to a small audience and hardly anyone is going to value it as much as you valued making it. I just lean on my creative strengths and enjoy the places it has brought me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are a lot of places in LA no matter what your taste is. But if you are going out with me you better be ready for dive bars, animatronics and clowns. Haha, I appreciate the dimmer watering holes with character. I like The Frolic Room, HMS Bounty, Ye Rustic Inn ,Jumbos Clown Room and Footsies ( bring back your pool table if you are reading this). I’m also a theme park geek, so we would end up on some rides discussing which animatronics we would Marry, F*ck, Kill. If it was summer time we’d for sure go to the beach. El Segundo doesn’t get enough love. Their beach is fine, the purple orchid is a fun tiki bar and El Segundo Brewery puts out some good beers.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I for sure would have to shoutout my wife for all the support she has given me in order to pursue my creative endeavors. Also i’d have to shoutout my friend Chris. He helped created the first camera robot made and edited my children’s book. They are both always there at art shows to show support.
