Meet Sol Jay | Recording Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sol Jay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sol, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
In my eyes, the most important factor to succeed is mindset. Now, the mindset controls some big keys to move forward, not only in this era. I’ll summarize the top three. Consistency; as time passes and new social medias are introduced to the world, the generation’s attention span is only getting shorter. So as an artist with a following, you have to stay in their face and ears as much as possible. Patience; you can be the most talented artist releasing the best music, but get the least amount of traction for the time being. Most people give up making music, or whatever passion they may have, after their first couple months, or year, due to them not getting the results they intended. That’s not how the game goes. You have to stay patient and consistent, and trust yourself as well as the process. Discipline; lastly, without discipline, you’re less likely to stay consistent or patient. So know your boundaries, and now how much time you should be spending on certain things. Whether that be friends, family, fitness, leisure, etc. you have to dedicate a generous amount of time to accomplishing your goals, as that will bring success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is Sol Jay. With the goal of making a comfortable living off of my music one day, I started when I turned 13. I had visited my biological father and he gifted me with the software, Ableton Live, for my birthday. I utilized it as soon as I had it on my laptop, and never looked back once. I started out making beats, but a month or two into figuring out the DAW, I wanted to record, so I did. I started out recording out of my laptop mic. I would tilt my laptop screen down slightly and throw a rag over the top as the pop filter. I uploaded the first full song I recorded on Soundcloud. This was back in 2014 so Soundcloud was still starting up. After finding another fire artist on the site, we started making music. At least a mixtape’s worth of music. Chapters went along as I slowly built a following, but it wasn’t until 2017 that things would really start buzzing. My song “ride my wave” had gained the attention of the producer FISH, and he wanted to produce for me. We quickly started working and the first songs we put out together had caught the attention of many other creatives in the underground music scene. I was unaware of the music scene until I had made my own name in it. From there, I started working with many other artists and producers as I climbed up the ladder. In 2o17, I was in a group called, “Beamerboys”, with Summrs, Autumn, Texako, David Shawty, and SportVVS. Shortly after, I was in a group called, “Simple Sect Stars”, which included Lil Tecca and Frankslastday. We all had similar goals so I loved working with them. Twitter used to be the hotspot for the underground music scene. That included many beefs as well as controversy that would spread quickly to others. I remember Summrs and I would have our little debates on twitter, and groups and followings would team up to defend. Those were the highschool days. I do tend to miss them sometimes, although I strongly dislike where I was located during those years. I was born and raised in California, but my family wanted to move to Utah when I was 10 since they thought it would be better for a family household. I had no choice at that age so I went along, even though I disagreed with the decision before it was made. The racism I faced while in Utah was a little much. It started as soon as I moved there, in elementary school. When I started posting about my music out there, there were many highschoolers that would publicly shame my name with a racist comment. Throughout those years, that wired me to stay to myself which led me to a lot of isolation at home. Looking back at it after moving back to LA, that time of isolation is what strengthened my passion to create art and embraced the knowing of standing out. There’s been a lot of wisdom that’s come from the experiences I’ve faced in the past. But they really taught me to learn from everything I experience, as that will shape my reactions to what happens or doesn’t in the future. For some of those lessons, I had hated who happened to teach me it. Then, after realizing what could’ve happened later on if they never “taught me”, I thanked them. Remember that everything that happened in the past, is what made who we are today. Now, apart from dancing and knowing every word to my music, I really want the world to gain wisdom and power from what I give out to the world. Whether or not it be music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had someone coming to visit, there’s countless areas I’d recommend I take them to. We’d have to hit Melrose one of the days so we can both get our shopping fix in. I’d go on a walk with them down Hollywood Blvd. We’d hit a bar or club on Sunset during a night. Maybe we’ll go to an underground show or rave in the downtown area. I’d have to take them to one of the filipino food spots out here since that’s always been my favorite food. We’d probably link up with some other friends at their house as well. Lastly, if they’re up for it I’d definitely take them on a hike through Runyon Canyon to see the whole city since that’s basically my backyard.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to thank God, first and foremost. Thank you for keeping my body healthy and helping me through my mental battles. And thank you to my Mom and Lola (Grandmother). Mom, giving birth to an Angel/King, being the strongest women I know, and raising me on her own. And Lola, for embracing me with more love than one can imagine, and being the root of my family, that truly has my back whenever I need.
