We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Hickey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
This for me is simple. When you stop believing in yourself and your vision, you’ve already given up. To me giving up isn’t an option – no matter what you’re trying to achieve there’s always going to be a reason for why you should give up and throw in the towel and it’s definitely easier to do just that. To keep going means perseverance throughout everything. You have to keep going because it’s the only way you can achieve your goal, if you always give up you never achieve anything. I always say it’s better to finish last than to give up, because at least you finished and earned the understanding and experience of what to do better for the next time. If you were to quit you wouldn’t have gained the right understanding and experience for the next time, because you would just quit again when things got tough the exact same way you quit the time before.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
From Video to Music to Graphic Design, creating IS who I am. My passion for creating started at a young age with art and music which took me on a defining journey through lived experiences and sharing the stage and studio with so many other talented musicians, songwriters and producers. Music has always been and will always be my main passion and driver in what I do. It literally goes hand in hand with everything creative.

In my years of embarking on Fatherhood being a performing artist became harder to keep up with and just when I saw a dream of having a career in music fading – Songwriting, Producing and Video Production became more and more of a niche and a calling after working on many different projects with many different people. It was like something new was unlocked.

I have over 15 years of experience as an Audio Engineer/Producer along with a Professional Information Technology background. So Video Production came very natural to me from the equipment to the software.

I’ve learned that opportunities are around every corner and that new beginnings are disguised at what always seems like a dead-end. We’re in control of how we react to things in our lives and those reactions are what determine the outcome of our lives. Every single one of us are a work in progress as long as we keep working on ourselves.

As a visual, creative and performing artist, coupled with being a passionate songwriter, audio and video production expert I have an edge on the ability to bring to life immersive and compelling story’s through visual and audible productions that are both highly professional and captivating and convey the real vision of each business or individual I work with. I study every brand and business I work with and sit down to talk and meet with them to truly understand their culture and who they are – only then can I see their vision.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d give them the good ole’ San Diego experience – Start with a day at the beach (Pacific beach or Coronado) then Gaslamp district for the night life experience, onto the remaining days of visiting Old Town, Balboa Park, Seaport Village, La Jolla, Little Italy, Zoo, Seaworld, etc. As for food there’s so many great places, but for sure no one has ever been disappointed with the options in Little Italy or Old Town. Drinks and Hang Outs, there’s so many breweries to check out, but 2 spots I’d say would be Liberty Station and OB. Everything is fun and exciting when you’re with great people but downtown and the beach have some of the most interesting things to see!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost I thank God for giving me the talent I have and each and every day I’ve had and continue to have in this life. I’m grateful for my parents that taught me to work hard, be consistent and have integrity in everything I do. I learned a lot from them both good and bad, which has helped me to know exactly who I want to be in life. But my incredible Wife has been the greatest inspiration and support I’ve had in my life. Her love, strength and wisdom is what helped build me to this very moment. She’s the most amazing human being I’ve ever known and continues to challenge me at being better than I was the day before. I’m able to do what I love because of her love and support and I’m truly grateful and thankful for that.
