We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Megan Marie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Megan, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I think this question encompasses the tricky part of my work, because there are SO many things about the Naturopathic Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy fields that outsiders are unaware of. Most people have never even heard the titles, I certainty hadn’t before my first experiences. I sincerely wish both titles weren’t such mouthfuls. A naturopathic doc is someone who goes to medical school, goes through the same classes as an allopathic (or “conventional”) doc, but also trains in botanical medicine, nutrition, counseling, and physical medicine (similar to what chiropractors learn). We’re trained to work with the whole person, not just a diagnosis. Craniosacral Therapy is a hybrid of energy and bodywork. The practitioner assesses the movement of the fascia and other tissues of the body. Then invites any restrictions to unwind; less tension means more energy and healthier function. Honestly, what most people don’t know is these ways of practicing medicine and healing are what they’re looking for.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I love what I do. Every day and every patient experience is unique. I never know what we’re going to work with on the table from day-to-day, and that excites and delights me. I think I allowed my own stories and doubts to make starting and running my business complicated in the beginning, but gradually I’ve learned that simplicity really is the magic ingredient. Simple communication, simple transactions, simple explanations. Less really is more. The less I talk, the more questions people ask, the more people share, the more space there is. I want people to know that there is a space where healing doesn’t have to be complicated. That we can come home to ourselves, and not feel overwhelmed by our lives and circumstances. I know it, because I’ve experienced it in my own life, and in the lives of my patients.
What sets me apart is my authenticity and ability to hold space & connect with my patients. They come in, share their symptoms, their lives, and their vulnerabilities with me. Sometimes verbally, but most often from what their bodies tell me in sessions; things they weren’t really able to put into words before or feel was possible to work with. And it’s all done in such a gentle, inviting way. My patients laugh with me, they cry, there are *a lot* of expletives, both out of frustration and relief, together we bring a lot of humanity and compassion to the health journey. My patients get real relief on the table, that they can carry with them into their lives. Where they feel more grounded, more empowered, and, of course, healthier.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I’m not big on having a full day doing a lot of things. I prefer something easier and more intimate. So, I might start at Bird Rock Coffee at Torrey Pines, then do the Torrey Pines hike and walk back on the beach. Then get some chicken mole at Tamarindo. Then maybe a drive up the 1 to Encinitas or Carlsbad. There’s Lotus Cafe with amazing moonlight mango smoothies in Encinitas, or Me So Hot Ramen in Carlsbad.
