Meet Sahar Mace | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sahar Mace and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sahar, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think authenticity has a lot to do with how I have been able to be successful in my work. Bringing out the authentic, real relationships people have with their loved ones and then freezing those memories for them to have forever is so special. When a mother walks in a field with her children and one of them reaches up for her hand, I want to capture that, those are the moments I live for. I also believe it is so important to be authentic with your clients, be yourself, people will respect you for that. Don’t be afraid to dissect your work and allow yourself room to learn and grow.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer, but really I feel what I do is so much more than that. I am here to capture people’s love for one another, unscripted and unrehearsed. After becoming a wife and a mother, I saw how quickly time slips away from us. Our memories fade and the sun rises and sets all too quickly, but images tell a story for generations to come. Capturing people’s special moments in all of their phases of life is important and I’m here for it! I love the experiences I get to have with all the people I have met throughout this journey. I think that’s what keeps this work so fresh, telling so many different stories. Consider me a bard and when you look back at the moments we capture together I want you to hear your story being sung to you. I would never ever say to anyone starting their business in photography, that it is easy, there is so much that goes into this business. I think having guidance from my mentors along the way really helped me get where I am today. I’ve said it before, but this is an ever changing industry and if you aren’t willing to learn and grow with it, you can get lost. I am in this business because I truly love what I do. A lot of thought has gone into making the process easy for clients, from hand selected items in my client closet, to the props and wraps I use with newborns, and the locations I have scouted. Having beautiful images at the end of it all is not the only thing that matters, it’s the experience you provide for your clients. I hear it from my clients, they love working with me because the experience is fun, it is effortless, and they cherish the moments I capture for them. I think that says something about the blood, sweat, and yes tears, I have put into my work. I have found that for me personally, stepping away from “the business” to find joy in what you do elsewhere is important too. I love volunteering when I can. I’ve been honored to work with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a non-profit that provides the gift of remembrance portraits to parents experiencing the death of a baby. I also volunteer for The Gold Hope Project, a non-profit that provides portrait sessions to any pediatric cancer patient at any stage of treatment, remission, or survivorship. Finding time to give back has humbled me in ways I never imagined.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay, this is a good question because my answer two years ago would have been different. Back then I would have said Coronado to eat at Clayton’s Cafe, up to La Jolla to see the seals & sea lions, San Diego Zoo, and of course Balboa Park. Since then I have seen a lot more here and I would say my list goes a little more like this, North Park for Dunedin New Zealand Eats, shopping and food tasting in Liberty Station, Seaside Market Cardiff for their tri-tip sandwich, beach lounging in Solana Beach, and of course still the San Diego Zoo.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Gosh, there are so many people that I can give a shout-out to! I think in my field leaning on other photographers for mentorship and guidance is paramount to success. I have learned from Jordan Brennan from Jordan Brennan Photography out of Palm Beach, Florida and with Stormy Solis’s All Heart Access courses. Those women were, and still are guiding lights in an industry that can feel so competitive and so vast. Community over competition is truly something I live by when it comes to other photographers. I have learned so much about the industry from other photogs and will forever be grateful to them.
