We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Being tolerant of risk allows one to take the necessary steps to get to where they want to go. I grew up poor and as such I have a certain mindset about money. I didn’t want to invest or put my money at risk, even though there was a good chance I’d earn more. Without risk, one can become complacent. It’s a recurring theme in my life. My mother is risk averse, she’s never seen another country, has no interest, and is always working to ensure she’s safe. I understand that impulse. I try to fight it or identify it when it comes to decision making and weighing the pros and cons of a big decision. Taking a risk and leaving my job to start my own business was a huge one.

What should our readers know about your business?
DigiSavvy began life when two friends had a conversation while playing Magic: the Gathering. The two discovered a penchant for entrepreneurial pursuits, in addition to being full-metal dorks. DigiSavvy was born at a card shop.

Me and my business partner at the time, Chris Tolar, took on local small businesses and hustled and continued to get business. But DigiSavvy was always a part-time endeavor for the two of us. Chris was a full-time college student and I was working full-time.

Eventually, we went our separate ways, I retained the business and managed to go grow it further.

When I was struggling with DigiSavvy and my full-time job, I was feeling burned out. It was an episode of ‘Parks and Rec’ where Ron Swanson tells Leslie Knope that she can’t half-ass two things; she has to whole-ass one thing. The next day after watching that episode I put in my notice and started working DigiSavvy full-time on February 28th, 2014. I call that day “I do what I want” day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh gosh.

I love Buena Vista Hill, in Elysian Park. I like going there near sunset or sometimes just for lunch and a nap. It’s a lovely view of the city.

I adore the “Top of Mt. Washington” it’s a tiny strip of road that connects to sides of Mt. Washington and overlooks the city below. It’s a great place to watch fireworks or to make out with your special someone. =)

I love walking the Secret Stairs all around Los Angeles. I highly recommend the book by Charles Fleming that details the various stairs walks around town.

A shout out to Constellation Coffee. I love getting a drink there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friends and family; my local WordPress community, and my fellow self-employed colleagues. Without their support and encouragement, I wouldn’t have carried on as I have. I appreciate their presence in my life. for sure. In those times when you feel alone, it’s easy to want to crawl deeper into that loneliness. I encourage folks to reach out to their friends to vent and also just to check-in.
