We had the good fortune of connecting with Sergio Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sergio, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always been fascinated with Technology and 3D, from video games to BFX in movies and Architecture. So taking the path of architectural visualization was a no-brainer for me. I graduated in architecture and it was during my studies that I was introduced to 3D software, those were the classes I enjoyed the most, and I started practicing in my free time as well. Once I graduated from school, I started working as a full-time architect and immediately learned that the part of the process I enjoyed the most was when 3D was involved.
At the moment I was just learning about the scope and the possibilities for the architectural visualization industry worldwide. An architecture visualization career path wasn’t very common back then here in Mexico, at least not a path where you can have a secure future, even less likely if you are from Culiacán, Sinaloa, which is mostly known for crime-related news and not for architecture/technology geeks. That was the reason I didn’t know anything about the industry until I was already in university.
I made up my mind back then and decided that this was what I wanted to do, I quit my job and started working in 3D as a freelancer full time (as most people do). Throughout the way, I was lucky enough to have the support from my family, girlfriend, friends, and mentors who accompanied me towards my dream and gave me the tools needed to keep pushing forward.
While working as a freelancer I realize that there were a lot of young and talented people who like me, wanted to pursue this career path. But there just wasn’t enough information and businesses that offered full 3D services. I understood that frustration and it motivated me to start a business with a working environment where they could feel that they belong and that their 3D skills were taken seriously enough to live out of 3D.
That’s how Epic! Shelter started, in a room at my apartment with me and 2 friends, now we are a small business with clients from Mexico and other countries.
What should our readers know about your business?
I found it interesting how top athletes and artist achieve their goals by being relentless and true professionals. I believe that whatever you do, you can excel and find success if you are passionate and have the discipline to always improve.
Being an architect and more oriented to the artistic side of things has made this entrepreneur journey a very interesting learning experience. But that is what I enjoy the most, I need to be always learning and improving for the business’ sake and mine.
I’m very proud that this project has helped young artists to grow both professionally and personally. I’m very excited about what the future holds, I really want this business to evolve into a family company where everyone involved can feel secure and part of something incredible.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Easy, the itinerary would be a food-oriented one. Sinaloa is world famous for its food and beaches. From “Pueblos magicos” (Magic towns) like Mocorito, Cosalá, el Fuerte & El Rosario to the most visited beach in México, Mazatlán, Sinaloa.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, who has always supported me even though they don’t understand what I do. Luisa my life partner, who has endured all the ups and downs of this journey since the beginning. Jose and Carlos, for believing in this project from the start and helping build the foundation of what became Epic! Shelter.
