We had the good fortune of connecting with Rory Christiansen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rory, what are you inspired by?
I am always inspired by other artists and their work. I think it’s amazing to see people be successful by just playing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Each one of us all have a different perspective. I didn’t need to do anything to set myself apart because we all bring something unique to the table as individuals. I am very fast at drawing and could probably take a couple of prizes in the speed category. I also realize that it’s good to slow down to, but if I need to put the pedal to the medal I can do that portrait in under 30 seconds per person. Really it’s If you have that flight to make or the line to get drawn is just too long. I’ve been trying to just have more fun drawing by going slower, and if you sit down to have me draw you I want you to feel like you have had a one of a kind experience that can’t be duplicated.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to go to the Hotel Del Coronado because there is a very cool beach shack bar in the back that is right on the beach. You just need a pair of flip flops and an hour or two. Get a taco, soda, beer, etc. If your still hungry I would go to little Italy next and get a sandwich at Mona Lisa deli. I would then head over to La Jolla coves to see some seals, Torrey Pines or Solana beach for the sunset. Now that it’s night time I would take advantage of some historical ghost tours out of old town followed by false idol hidden tiki bar. That’s day one!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I haven’t conquered the world and don’t intend to, but I can rest easy at night knowing that drawing silly faces can make people laugh and take life less seriously. I owe that skill to all the fellow artists I’ve worked with who have shared their tips and tricks as well as paved the way for others.
