We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharla Fagan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sharla, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?

In 2011, I had an opportunity to open up my own salon and created the name Shear Karma. I knew that karmically, I was meant to start my own business, help change the beauty industry, and put out good karma into the world. My salon concept came from many aspects of my life.

Hairstylists are exposed to numerous chemicals and being in the hair industry since the 90’s, I witnessed many hairstylists around me experience health issues. With my passion to educate myself and others, I became an educator for professional companies that cared about the health of stylists, clients, and the earth. These companies had strong values of using safe ingredients while achieving the performance of a quality product.

Having recyclable and sustainable products is also an important value. The salon industry sends over 800lbs of waste into landfills with the amount of supplies used for services. I teamed up with Green Circle Salons so that Shear Karma is able to recycle almost everything we use in our salon. We contribute by reducing our carbon footprint so our earth can heal.

I believe taking care of your mental health is also very important. We focus on providing holistic practices in the salon while teaching self care. Self care and self love helps create a happy, healthy way of practicing mindfulness. A positive view of yourself and life reduces stress, prevents illness, and gives you and those around you a more joyful life experience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Shear Karma is more than just a hair salon. We provide a holistic experience that focuses on self-care, relaxation, and rejuvenation from the moment you enter the salon. We use only non-toxic clean products, recycle 95% of our salon waste and provide chakra healing while you’re in the chair. In today’s social society, there are high expectations of how you need to look on the outside. Most salons focus on outside beauty. We believe that beauty on the inside is equally important as the outside. Everyone has a special, unique light that shines from the inside and out. Beauty is loving yourself unconditionally.

Our purpose is to create a positive, relaxing space so you can experience self care. We teach self care rituals to practice at home and give affirmations to help raise your positive energy. Soul stones are used at the stylist station and shampoo bowl to help balance and strengthen chakras. The custom blend of aromatherapy on your towel gives an experience of being in a spa. You will leave the salon feeling rejuvenated with good karma for your hair, mind and soul.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spot in San Diego is Carlsbad. I love the small, beach town feel which is the reason I live and also raised my daughter there. The beach is clean and big so there’s plenty of sand space for people. If you don’t like being in the sand, there are boardwalks alongside the ocean where you can walk, run or ride your bike. Carlsbad Village has a lot of cute boutique stores and a variety of food places to eat. My daughter and I enjoy Board and Brew on a regular basis. Their sandwiches are big and use fresh ingredients.

Every Wednesday afternoon, the Village as a Farmers Market where you can buy local, organic produce and products. There’s a Ccoaster station close by so it gives you easy access to the Village or if you want to explore another part of San Diego.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have abundant gratitude to my daughter Kaili. Raising her on my own inspired me to have the strength and courage to start a business on my own. She also inspired me to help people create a self care routine and healthy ways to reduce stress. I raised her to be independent and have the confidence to achieve her dreams in life. As a single mother, she taught me patience, gratitude, and the perseverance to strive and never give up. I got knocked down numerous times building a life for us and learned to keep getting up, dust myself off and keep moving forward. We will always have challenges in life. It’s how you learn and grow that is important.
