We had the good fortune of connecting with Joni Daniel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joni, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was 2006. Social media had not become mainstream yet. My husband was an active duty Marine and my daughter was just barely 4 years old. We had moved 5 times in the last 4 years and would do one more by mid next year. The portable job market had not really blossomed yet. So to give myself some perceived control I chose to start my own business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love paper crafting! I supply the customer service to a fellow Crafter from start to finish. That could be supplies, kits, or even a custom finished piece. I am different than a craft store because I can help you plan a project, order the supplies, and help you finish it too!

I got to where I am today through over 16 years of craft fairs, classes, and people. I haven’t had major challenges except what life throws at you. My daughter grew up and is now on her own as I sat and crafted. She has seen me volunteer with business organizations (such as the local Chamber of Commerce) as well as give back to the community with help in fundraisers through raffles or anything else I could add to their event. My husband has retired as an active duty Marine and is now running his own business.

I say to many of my Crafters that my life has happened as I crafted.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would hope this would happen in November. I would take her to the Scrapbook Expo to see what’s new in the crafting circuit. We would stop on the way home to eat at the historic Mission Inn in Riverside while enjoying the view and the delightfully fresh dining experience.

The next day we would hike Joshua Tree National Park and finish the evening with a fresh salad on the porch with produce from the local Farmers’ Market.

Throw in a drive down to Palm Springs to be whisked up the mountain at the Palm Springs Tram. Do a touch of hiking and enjoy a snack and the view at the top of the mountain.

And then finish the week with a visit to the air museum to see a few flyovers and enjoy a stroll down Palm Canyon window shopping and grabbing a bite to eat at Sherman’s Deli.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My story started with me wanting more in life and my husband supporting that. I had several businessmen that mentored me. Chuck Uyeda, financial advisor, mentored me more in modeling what to do rather than talking to me. He walked the walk and showed me work ethic and what it took every day to be successful. Roy Centner, another mentor and owner of the local tire shop, took me under his wing as well. Roy had a certain smirk and a way of saying …”Kid, don’t worry. Just put the work in.” I have also had countless coaches both online and in person. Shelby Freeman was singlehandedly the coach that kept me going. She scheduled extra sessions so I could run the numbers and figure out how to stop working as an assistant in the finance business and become my own boss. Within 6 months I was able to go full-time as a paper crafter.

This all started with my Grama who had her own studio as I grew up. My first project (shown in the photos) was one of a ceramic pumpkin cookie jar. My Grama continuously aided my creativity allowing me to have an outlet from the normal academics associated with schooling. Ever since that first pumpkin I was hooked.
