We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Hoffmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was in Pharmaceutical Sales for 7 years, and always felt like I was meant for more. On paper my job sounded really great, but in reality I was miserable. The company culture and leadership were toxic, and I was unfulfilled by what I was doing every day.

I finally had enough and knew I needed to find a job that I loved, and felt fulfilled by, and gave me the freedom that I was longing for. I dug deep and realized that I was meant to be my own boss, and start a business as a makeup artist. I knew nothing about being a makeup artist other than that I loved makeup, and my friends always told me how good I was. I figured out how to improve my skills, build a strong client base, and created a successful, in=demand luxury makeup artistry business.

After several years of being in this business, I began to feel that I was meant to help my clients in a deeper way. I noticed that often they were confiding in me how they felt about themselves, and how they wished to feel more confident, or comfortable with themselves. I realized that I wanted to help them shift the way they feel about themselves and their lives in a more transformative way, and that the best way to do that was to become a Life Coach. I became certified as a Trauma Informed Intimacy and Life Coach, and pivoted my business during the pandemic to being a coach.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business now is so different than my last business as an artist. I’ve really created my coaching business to be not only in service to my clients but also to me and what I want my life-style to be. I work with women who are feeling lost and stuck, and they want to rediscover who they are, and reclaim that true identity. I help them discover their soul’s work, be more in tune with their intuition, and build self trust so they can build a life they love and feel lit up by.

What sets me a part from other coaches is my connection with my own intuition and energy, and that I teach my clients how to connect to and use their own intuition and energy to feel more flow in their life. So often we are taught to look outside ourselves for the answers, but when we learn to trust our intuition and energy to guide us, things become easier for us.

I’m also deeply empathetic and great at holding space for my clients, so they know they can show up exactly as themselves, and I hear and see them where they are, and provide a non-judgmental space for them to be themselves.

I’m really excited about recently becoming certified in NLP, EFT, Neural Energetic Encoding, TIME Techniques and Hypnosis as tools to add to my coaching practice to help my clients have even better results. I’m a lover of learning, and I’m always learning more tools and practices to help me be a better coach and a better version of myself.

There have been many challenges along the way of pivoting my business to something new, especially during these last few years. It was hard for me to start over again, and I often I would feel frustrated that my business wasn’t growing as fast as I wanted it to, especially since I closed a very successful business. I had to build a lot of patience with myself and deepen in my belief in myself that I would reach my goals, even if it wasn’t happening as quickly as I wanted. And I had to stop looking to others and what they were doing, whether it was the fast success they were claiming on social media, or thinking they had the answers that I needed to become an “overnight success”. I had to stay in my own lane for what works for me, and also what my message and truth are to share, because that’s what attracts the clients I want to work with. I also had to learn that I am on my own journey, and it will unfold exactly as it is supposed to if I trust in it.

I see so many women doing what they think they are “supposed to do”, rather than what their heart wants them to do, or caring way too much about what other people will think or say about them. My story and what I’m here to share is that you have to get clear on who you are and what you feel you are here to do, and believe in yourself that you can do it. You get to create your own path and timeline for how you live life. You will feel happier, more fulfilled, and at peace when you can understand and love who you are, and feel confident to show up as yourself, regardless of what other people may think or say. And you’ll find that the more assured you are in your own identity, the less you care about other people’s opinions. Your opinion is the only one that matters for you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Folsom, CA, which is a small suburb of Sacramento. Folsom is a beautiful city where nature and being outdoors is a high value. We have beautiful nature trails and bike paths everywhere, and they are so fun to explore. I would definitely take visiting friends to Lake Natoma to go stand up paddle boarding or kayaking under the Rainbow Bridge. I’d take them to the historic Sutter Street, to enjoy the shops and restaurants, and see historic buildings and a pioneer village. If it’s during the summer, we’d definitely go to one of the Twilight Concerts on Thursdays in Historic Folsom. We’d have lunch at Karen’s Bakery one day, my favorite lunch spot. We’d have dinner one night at Mikuni’s Folsom, my favorite sushi restaurant, and another night at the Sutter Street Steakhouse. We’d have happy hour at Citizen Vine, to enjoy their delicious small plates and wine. We’d have brunch at Ironhorse Tavern and enjoy bottomless mimosas with fresh squeezed oj. And we’d probably also go grab a coffee at either Sociology or World Traveler’s Coffee. I’d also take them to Green Acres Nursery to get a cute plant, because I’m obsessed with buying plants, and visit the Planet Rising metaphysical store to buy some crystals. We’d take neighborhood walks every day on the nature trails. We’d take the kids to Castle Park to play on the cute wooden play structures. And if it was summer, we’d spend the day at the pool at the Lifetime Athletic Club where I’m a member, and feel like we were at a resort.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my husband Jacob and my son Oliver. Jacob has been with me every step of the way when I wanted to quit my corporate job, to becoming a makeup artist, and to being supportive of me when I wanted to close that business to become a coach. He’s been understanding and patient as I’ve been building this new business, and has never made me feel pressured or rushed to to reach my goals. And my son Oliver, who has taught me so much about having patience and grace with myself, as a woman, a mother, and an entrepreneur, and helped me realize what’s important to me now, and to be more present in my life.
