We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Haynie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I think it’s important that you should always keep going and never give up especially in passions. If it’s something you enjoy, you love, and have dedicated yourself, it’s what you’re meant to be period. It’s hard to follow dreams in a world in which the majority of us are meant to go on and live normal lives and work normal jobs. All of us at one point were dreamers. But most of us stopped dreaming and found peace in the normal. For me, I’m never giving up. Singing is something I enjoy, I love, and have dedicated to. It’s who I am and it’s who I’m meant to be. For me, there is no such thing as giving up.

As a singer, it’s important to acknowledge that you have a good singing voice. But for me, it’s also being able to have the ability to tell a story with your voice. To make people feel sadness in a sad song. To feel love in a love song. To feel happiness in a upbeat song. It’s important to transfer that emotion onto your audience and impact them further than just a beautiful voice. Growing up, I did not have any vocal coaches. What I did was feel songs out. Since a young age, I’d listen to music and kind of like an actor, I’d channel myself into the song. I want to know what the song is telling me first before I sing it. My favorite artist was Adele because the way she transferred her emotions onto her music. Of course at 10 I couldn’t sing like Adele. But at age 10 I did understand her songs and I belt them out until I could hit her notes. Everyday, every song I heard, I wanted to understand music. Along the way, I had a difficult time transferring the voice I had behind my closed door to live audiences. And it wasn’t easy. Stage fright can shake your vocal chords not allowing you to sing the way you want. But as time went by and with much support of my mother, I just stuck to feeling the music and that’s exactly what allows me to sing today

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well lucky for me my bestfriend is where I’m from…San Diego California. I believe Downtown San Diego is the place you need to see when you visit our city. We’ve got the padres Stadium, small business with great food options, night events, and beautiful views. I recommend crossing on over to Coronado!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Having the ability to sing in-front of others was my very first struggle. My mother is the person who made me realize that my voice is not something I should be scared to put out in the world. She showed me that I shouldn’t care what anyone thinks. That my main focus should always be to sing with meaning and to not only sing but to tell a story. That’s what I continue to do. Thank you mom
