We had the good fortune of connecting with Karyn Frisby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2019, I took the leap of faith and ventured out on my own path after owning and operating a small business with my ex husband for year.s
My thought process was I knew I understood what it took to create a business from the ground up, the blood, sweat and tears, if you will. I had been through the highs and lows, the long hours, the risks, the successes of owning a small business and I felt I could help other small businesses. My strength as well as passion was marketing and branding. I also could see how important social media was becoming to help market small businesses online. So, I created Five Ten Social, a small boutique social media management firm. You get someone who understands how a small business owner thinks, the importance of their time and being able to focus on the business, not in it with the experience of building a successful brand and marketing it the right way.
So, here I am, 2.5 years later, working with a handful of local small businesses, building their online presence. The fun part is, I work with all women owned businesses. That is something I am very proud of because it’s empowering to work with them, learn from each other and continued to be inspired by them
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a social media manager as well as the host of the Getting Social with Karyn podcast.
I believe my background as a small business owner sets me apart from many due to the fact that I GET IT. I really get it when a potential new client tells me, “I just don’t have time to sit down and write out a post b/c I need to get these orders” or “my brain is always going. I have ideas left and right so I’m kind of all over the place.” Trust me, I uderstand.
In August 2020, I really put myself out there with launching my podcast, Getting Social with Karyn, I had wanted to do a podcast since forever but was just scared. I thought to myself, why am I scared? I’ve opened a business with 30+ employees before and didn’t know what I was doing but I figured it out. I’ve bungee jumped but am terrified of heights. Come on, I can do this and feel i have something to offer.
It has been the most fun I have had and the scariest. I remember thinking, please just one person ( besides my friends) listen to it. It has been a process yet, I’m enjoying it and the feedback keeps me going. The podcast centers on real conversations, real topics many women ( and men) don’t talk about so I do! I’ve talked about everything from the mommy makeover, divorce, starting over in life to sex after kids!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh my god! Where to start? If i were able to plan my best friend’s itinerary in San Diego, it would go something like this..
Little Italy is an absolute must experience for anyone visiting the city. The culture, the food, people and vibe are just too fun to not share with friends.
After brunch at either Morning Glory or Zinque, strolling the Farmer’s Market in Little Italy is a great way to walk off those mimosas and support the vendors at the market. A picture in the iconic BIG red chair is a must for everyone.
A day in Coronado is always special. I would rent bikes to cruise around the island and end at the Hotel Del with a sunset cocktail in their downstairs lounge.
In my view, some of the most fun, interesting and exciting places to check out in San Diego are the San Diego Zoo (I mean, the animals are too cute), the Del Mar scene for it’s people watching ( Jake’s is always great for that) and it’s beach. Finally, you can’t take a trip to San Diego without visiting Balboa Park. It offers so much beauty, culture, food and fun.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to Danielle Strauss. It might not be the answer people would expect however, without this beautiful soul, I never could have achieved success from an early on. She was our son’s nanny for many years. When I started out building my first business, I realized I couldn’t be the full time mom and full time entrepreneur I envisioned myself being. So, I accepted the fact I needed help. Accepting that I needed help with managing things at home and having that extra set of hands and warm heart for my son enabled me to do what I needed to do to get the company off the ground, systems in place, employees hired and eventually the company running so well, I didn’t have to be there all the time. I was able to spend more time at home-creating that work/life balance. If I hadn’t accepted I needed help, I couldn’t do it all, I wouldn’t have met Danielle, who became family to us even to this day. I realized very early on in my career, asking for help, accepting your strengths, weaknesses and surrounding yourself with people who can add value to your life whether its in your personal life or career ( or both) only helps you to achieve your goals.
