We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Commercial Real Estate Brokerage is a self-starter and self-disciplined business which allows you to learn from all aspects from the Real Estate Industry that was appealing to me. Also, the freedom to work on your own time is also what attracted me to this business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Being disciplined and having the determination and motivation to become the best in the business sets me apart from the others. I am most proud of the fact that I am an immigrant and had to learn the English language and was able to start the business at a young age of 21. Real Estate Brokerage is a challenging business, often times people will not know when the next paycheck will be, however, we overcome our daily struggles with a long term outlook and understanding that this business takes a lot of patience to succeed and also with an attitude of never giving up. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is to put others interests before myself and to operate with fairness. Also, to show empathy and be kind to people goes a long way.

If an immigrant coming to the US at 14 years old and can make it in commercial real estate that also means that anyone that sets their mind into something they want to succeed in can make it too.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would show them around the many beaches in SoCal and dine at local community restaurants or michelin star places in LA. I would take them to the Republic to eat breakfast in LA, and I would take them to Blue Bottle coffee in LA area, then we would go to Mastro’s for dinner. I would also show them the beautiful coast line in central California and show them the different atmosphere that is offered in Northern California as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first mentor in the business is Kevin Struve who hired me on as I started the business and showed me the ropes to become who I am today.
