We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Peranzo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
If you had asked me if I wanted to own my own business or be an entrepreneur around 10 years ago, I probably would have laughed at you. Unbeknownst to me, I was already in that world of entrepreneurship. I joined it as soon as I left the traditional corporate America structure of work back in 2012 to be a fitness instructor full time.

Even at that point, it did not cross my mind to go into business for myself. I hustled and worked for different training facilities, driving all around the city I live in to train as much as I could because I love what I do THAT much.

Being able to train in all those facilities, in tons of different modalities of fitness and with a very diverse population of clients taught me that we all have more in common than we initially think: we all want to be healthy, we all want to be fit and strong, but we do not always know how to accomplish those goals in the midst of extremely busy schedules.

I saw the problem, I heard the problem my community was having in creating a realistic as well as maintainable healthy lifestyle and I began to think that I was not doing enough. After all, I had the knowledge, the training, and the tools necessary to help teach my community what they needed to do, but my reach was too small.

It was ultimately the driving need to help as many people as I possibly could that motivated me to start A Healthful Life. I could take the community I already have and expand it to an even bigger community with the help of the internet so I could ensure that my mission to help my tribe was truly accomplished.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Fitness has always been a priority in my life. When I was a young adult, I was injured in an Army ROTC training accident and did not walk for about a year. While I hold a tremendous amount of pride in the resilience I showed myself, by learning how to walk and drive again, while also graduating college, my injury taught me that fitness is an individualized journey.

I am determined to break through the cookie cutter approach the fitness industry can tend to gravitate towards and instead show my clients that regardless of where they are at in their fitness journey, that being fit is achievable for every body. I want to teach my clients how to listen to their bodies, how to push themselves from a place of love and respect, and how to fall in love with the process of getting strong.

This journey has not always been an easy one. It has taught me the power of patience as well as the power of pivoting. The challenges will always be there, but I know that showing up from a place of true caring for the people I work with will help me overcome those obstacles.

It has taught me how to be compassionate as well as how to motivate the people around me to step into their true strength.

While this was not the path I would have thought I was going to embark upon, there is nothing I would do to change any of it because every time a client tells me “I have never felt stronger”, I know I am making a difference.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is such an amazing place!

We always have so many options for fun things to do, like hiking Torrey Pines or Annie’s Slot Canyon, or kayaking around Mission Bay. But I am also a huge fan of going to see live shows at the Radys Jacobs Shell or catching a Padres game. I am also always in to sharing the history of our awesome beach town especially with the haunted tours of the Hotel Del or downtown San Diego.

Without a doubt, I would have to take my bestie to Horseshoe Beach in La Jolla and grab some awesome Mexican at La Cuatras Milpas.

My other go to is the breakfast at Mystic Mocha and the happy hour at Sea180.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family first and foremost. They have encouraged and supported me as I embarked on something new and terrifying in starting my own business, they have motivated me to keep going when I have felt discouraged, and have been my personal cheerleaders when I doubted my capabilities.

My tribe AKA my clients. Every time we show up to workout together, I am beyond grateful. I am grateful that you trust my expertise and knowledge, I am grateful that you take time out of your day to spend with me, and I am honored that you trust me to help guide you in your health and wellness journey.
