Meet Clyde and Pamela Morgan | Sunny Dojo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Program Directors

We had the good fortune of connecting with Clyde and Pamela Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Clyde and Pamela, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My husband, Clyde, has always taught: Dance, Capoeira, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Fitness, etc. When he began teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I asked him if he would ever want to have his own place and he said yes, when I retire. Well, we are years before traditional retirement age and here we are. We opened up our own dojo the beginning of this month, Sunny Dojo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Since we just started, our first hurdle is getting our first clients. We’ve signed up one student so far but getting our first 15-20 students is the most crucial part of opening up Sunny Dojo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
We also live in San Diego, one of the meccas of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the US, so that’s another hurdle we have to overcome. What sets us apart is that we are not a competition academy. Our mission is to provide professional and highly effective martial arts training for our community in a safe environment. Helping individuals to become the best possible versions of themselves through discipline, education and fitness. We concentrate on teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense and practical uses.
It is definitely not easy. It’s taken hard work and it’s going to take consistency to get our first students through the door and to sign up. It’s a challenge we knew we would have to face and we welcome them. It’s the only way we can learn the best and worst practices to gaining a steady flow of students and keeping quality students.
We do offer FREE Self-Defense Seminars for organizations like schools or churches within 10 miles of Serra Mesa, San Diego. If you want to hold an event, contact us and let’s schedule our event!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The beach is always our number one spot other than the mats. As far as food goes: cali burritos and carne asada fries, pho, Friendly’s burger, sushi / a poke bowl from Hawaiian Fresh Seafood and tacos, we can’t forget tacos. Visit a winery and / or brewery here and there and we’ve got drinks covered. Anything that is relaxing is always a plus, which is also why we love living in San Diego.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To our families and friends who have supported us in this new journey. You know who you are!
