We had the good fortune of connecting with Dee Godoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dee, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I decided to start a business I knew I wanted the theme to revolve around self love. I’ve had many ups and downs dealing with Bipolar disorder and it took a while for me to accept it and embrace who I am. I wanted to encourage others to embrace who they are and embrace self love too. I did a lot of spiritual work and was always drawn to The Egyptian gods and goddesses which is how I came across Heka, which is the Egyptian term for magic. I am a firm believer that we are all magic and to reconnect with that magic or with our Heka, we need to take time to sit with ourselves and just be. One of the ways to do that is through candles. Candles have always been my favorite self care remedy. When I want to read a book I’ll light a candle, if I want to draw a bath I’ll light a candle, if I want to meditate I’ll light a candle. Candles are the best spiritual remedies to use when we want to reconnect with ourselves, with our Heka. Each one of my candles has a positive affirmation that goes with it to encourage others to be kind to themselves, love themselves, and embrace who they are.

I Also knew that I wanted to create products that were safe. I pride myself on my candles being clean burning and non toxic. I use 100% soy wax, fragrances that are infused with essential oils and are free of parabens and carcinogens. They off course have a strong scent throw too!

In the end , I was able to create a business with a strong message and a product that not only I love, but others love too!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the things I am most proud of is my service in the Navy. The Navy gave me structure, taught me discipline, and I learned how to stay motivated even through the toughest of times, and especially during those underways and deployments. Without structure, discipline, and motivation, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

My passion has always been to work in the medical field so when I separated from the Navy, I went to school for respiratory therapy. I really enjoyed working with patients and I learned that helping others is something I really enjoy.

But despite my passion, I really wanted to connect with others in my own way, and so I started Heka Remedies.

What’s sets my business apart, is the message behind each candle. Anyone can look up how to make a good candle, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned, people want to invest in me, not just my business. When I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, learning to accept it was a huge challenge. I thought I was crazy and people would judge me. I thought my mental health was my weakness but it was actually my strength. I learned to love myself and I wanted that passion to reflect In my business. Heka remedies is about encouraging others to love themselves, flaws and all, letting others know they are not alone in their struggles, and teaching others how to reconnect with who they are and embrace self love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego is such an amazing city! One of my favorite places I would want to take a friend is Ho Chi Min Trail. It’s a hike that’s not too long and not too hard. You can either take the path to the top of the mountain or the other trail down to the beach. The views are so beautiful!

There are a lot of good places to eat in San Diego. My favorite pizza spot is Urbn in North Park. They have some amazing thin crust pizza. Little Sakana in Mira Mesa is a pretty good sushi spot that I would definitely take a friend to. If you love pasta then Joe’s Italian Dinners in Escondido is the place to go.

I feel like San Diego is pretty big on brunch and some good places to go to would be sugar and scribe in La Jolla (their mimosas are amazing), Breakfast republic in Pacific Beach, and Hash House A Gogo in Hillcrest.

Some hangout spots I would take a friend to would be the Little Italy Farmers market on Saturdays, I would also take them to dog beach in Ocean Beach, and of course Balboa Park, they have some great food and cool museums and you could spend the whole day there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love to read, and a book that really helped change my perspective on life is “The Buddha Said” by Osho. That book helped me open my eyes and once I finished reading it, I began my journey of being the best version of myself.

As far as people, I have my San Diego family to thank as well as my immediate family. Garcia, Kat, Genesis, Shelly, my parents and my sister, they all helped me throughout my journey. But the most important person I want to thank is my wife. She pulls me out of those slumps when I feel like giving up, she listens to all of my ideas, she supports my no matter what and I honestly don’t know where I would be without her.
