Meet Kevin Ann Jordan | Sustainable Style Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Ann Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin Ann, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Balance is one of my personal values and it is something I strive for in all areas of my life. The thing about balance is that it is SO hard to achieve!
Before kids, I thought balance was going to the gym five days a week, eating healthily, working in a corporate job that allowed me to make a meaningful contribution to society, spending time with family and friends, traveling, etc. After having kids, I’ve realized that finding balance in life is like the ocean – some days are stormy and others sunny and calm. The balance is less of an everyday thing and more of a time-of-life thing – I love the quote from Michelle Obama, “You can have everything, just not at the same time.” Once I became a mother, this sentiment resonated with me more than ever. The balance becomes caring for others AND yourself. Prioritizing the things that REALLY matter over the things that demand attention.
Balance also comes through in my work – the need to balance creativity with business. The need to work ‘on’ the business and not just ‘in’ the business. Plus, in fashion and style, creating balance in an outfit is one of the secrets of great dressing! See – balance is everywhere!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Have you ever stood in front of your closet (which is likely full of clothes) and felt like you have nothing to wear? I take the guesswork out of getting dressed as a sustainable style coach – I’m more than a personal stylist – I help my clients curate a wardrobe that supports their lifestyles and values. Getting dressed can be fun and easy!
These days talk of sustainability is everywhere – and rightly so – especially as it relates to fashion and consumerism. I believe that the most sustainable way to manage your wardrobe is by wearing the clothes you already own – shopping should be a seasonal activity (at most). While many people have heard of personal shoppers (and I do often shop with and for my clients) I almost always start with my clients in their closets. Often a fresh perspective is all that it takes to rediscover clothes that you love.
Nature has always been so important to me – I’ve always lived in naturally gorgeous places. I grew up in Lake Tahoe, California, lived in Sydney, Australia for almost a decade, and now live in North County San Diego. Now more than ever, we need to fight to preserve our planet. The more I learn about sustainable and ethical fashion, the more I want to share the information with the world, which is why I started a Sustainable Style Club, which brings bite-sized sustainable and ethical fashion information to the members weekly, plus it includes personal styling time (with me) each month that is focused on wearing the clothes we already own.
I’ve always loved fashion and clothes and I’ve never been tied to trends or fads. The average woman wants to wear clothes that make her feel fabulous – and that’s what we all deserve!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh my! I love visitors! And I’m a beach bum, so we’d be spending some part of most days at the beach.
Over a week, we’d be able to cover a lot of San Diego. I live in North County, so we would obviously start there – days would be spent at the beach in Carlsbad or hiking the nearby reservoir trails. We’d have fast-casual lunch at Shoreline and dinner at Jeune et Jolie one night. We’d need another day to explore Oceanside – the pier is a fun morning walk (including donuts from Parlor Doughnuts) followed by a wander down the 101 browsing vintage and artisan stores to Tremont Street for coffee. Afternoon sunset cocktails on the roof of the Mission Pacific Hotel and dinner at Valle or Matsu.
I went to UC San Diego for my undergraduate education, so I love La Jolla. Breakfast at The Cottage (I’m old school!) and a wander past the seals is a must-do. We’d spend the day at La Jolla shores, picking up sandwiches at The Cheese Shop. I love wandering downtown La Jolla because it feels so European, and after a late afternoon wander we’d end with a refreshment at La Valencia Hotel bar and a casual dinner at Pizza Port on the way home in Solana Beach.
The next day, we’d bike around Mission Bay and then head over to Kellogg beach in Point Loma, followed by dinner at Raglan Public House in Ocean Beach. Another day, we’d see the Padres or a show at The Shell at Jacobs Park before (or after) having dinner at Ironside downtown.
We could easily fill a week and then some! We are so lucky to live in San Diego and have the gorgeous beach (and weather) at our doorstep – makes me happy every day!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to all the women who came before me. My mom, aunts, grandmothers, great-grandmothers – all those women who didn’t have choices in their lives and demanded change so that I can be where I am today – in a world filled with choice. Women before me could be housewives…and then nurses, secretaries, teachers, etc. – and while these jobs are SO important for our society, now women can also be doctors, engineers, scientists, and more – all because the women before me were brave enough to create change. Sometimes I’m overwhelmed by the choices I get to make and I’m always grateful that I have the luxury of having so many choices!
Of course, I can’t forget that my parents, my husband, my sister, and my kids have all been a HUGE part of my success.
