We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Davidson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, what’s your definition for success?
This is a very tricky question to answer, as my success could mean failure to someone at a higher level. My shortcomings in my business and life could also be the dreams of others less fortunate. There are levels to everything in life. To me – success is growth. Whether that be giant leaps or baby steps. I make a comparison to professional athletes in this regard. Would you say that Michael Jordan had a successful year if he didn’t win an NBA championship? Probably not… But what about some of the bench players that were just trying to get their chance to be on the court for a few minutes and score a few points? Would you consider them a failure if they didn’t win an NBA championship with a bad team, while they still contributed in meaningful ways to their team on and off the court? Probably not… For some successful Realtors, selling $100,000,000 in a year is a failure. For some, it is something they could only wish to attain. Levels.

What is most important, as individuals and as business owners, is growth in every aspect of life. Some days in my line of work, simply getting up and putting on a smile for your clients is a success. Other days, closing a million dollar deal is a success. What matters is waking up every day with the positive mental attitude to crush whatever your goal is for that day. If you can go to bed at night and say “today was a success” more times than not, you are on the right track to success. What separates high level achievers from mediocre is the ability to go to bed at night knowing that today sucked and that it’s ok because you know tomorrow, you’re going to hit the ground with a new vigor to be better than the day before.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career has slowly evolved over the past 10+ years. I always joke around that my success is “an overnight success story, 10 years in the making.”

Was it easy? Yes and no… In some regards, it has felt effortless. Every year has become easier than the previous as my network grows. I can focus less on “finding my next lead” and more on helping the person I’m working with right now. In other regards, it has been extremely difficult. It is extremely difficult when you start to count up how many Friday nights and Sunday afternoons are spent growing your business, doing open houses, working on marketing, scouring the internet for new homes, etc. There are a lot of sacrifices that needed to be made for me to get to where I am now and where I am going in the future. Would I do them again? In a heart beat. Not necessarily for personal financial gain, but for the satisfaction I get for helping clients accomplish their dreams.

It is always hard to self-reflect and say what sets me apart from others. One thing that seems to be a recurring compliment from clients is how even keel I am. I think this is incredibly important and its an attribute that I have worked on developing over the years. It is important to stay level-headed and be someone’s rock when dealing with an extremely emotional decision. This has allowed my clients to keep their center and help make the best decision based on logic for themselves and their family.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One thing I love about where I live is we are centrally located to everything. Depending on who is visiting, I would create an itinerary of what I think they would love the most. Beach lovers? We are hitting ALL the beaches. Moonlight, Pacific Beach, La Jolla… Sightseer? We are going to the USS Midway, Disneyland, San Diego Safari Park… Foodie? We are tasting all that San Diego has to offer. And you’re not leaving without trying a Cali Burrito! Nature lover? We are hiking some beautiful trails and experiencing beautiful sunsets. I love my city because it truly has such a variety of activities that caters your every fancy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father has always been an inspiration to me. As a second generation Real Estate Broker, I learned the in’s and out’s of the business from him. I learned how important it is to focus less on the commission check and more on service. Our salary is a byproduct of the problems we help solve. My success as an individual and as a business man is largely due to his belief in me, his constant challenging for me to be better than the day before and just generally following his lead. He has a unique ability to know when someone needs to be picked up when they are down and when they need to be pushed when they are in their comfort zone.
