Meet Laura Gomez | Wellness Coach, Yoga teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Gomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Finding a balance of all the things that nourish you is unique. It’ll look different for everyone and it’ll look different as time goes on. We change and our habits change with us. I used to keep myself very busy throughout the day; going to school, working, and traveling or socializing constantly. Somehow I still found time for sleep. As the pandemic showed a lot of us, it’s okay to slow down. I actually found great pleasure in slowing down. I found solace in solitude. I’m in a time in my life where I’ve figured out (for now) what I want to spend my time doing and how I want to do it. I’ve accepted jobs that fit my scheduling needs, my values, and goals. Knowing that I’m not a 40+ hour work week kind of person, I found ways to meet my financial needs and still allow time for the hobbies that serve my mind and body. This is the kind of balance we strive for. Meeting our individual needs in a personalized way. It’s not an easy journey; it comes with sacrifice and fear and doubt… but it is worth every bit of living a life that nourishes you.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Building a career isn’t easy. It takes massive self-discovery and introspection as well as trusting the uncertainty. You have to try many thing to understand what you truly seek in terms of purpose, work environment, schedule, and any other values regarding your lifestyle. I currently teach social emotional learning, yoga, and wellness to students throughout the San Diego area. I feel really proud of the change I have been able to effect through my previous and current work. I’ve worked in mental health with at-risk youth in many settings and found great purpose in that. I’ve moved back into the school setting to implement more knowledge of wellness to help students prosper and achieve their authentic potential.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from New York, one of my favorite San Diego experiences is the visitors tour. I love taking people to the cliffs in La Jolla to do Ho Chi Minh (mostly scare the hell out of people with that trail) and then see the seals. I love taking people to balboa park, ocean beach, and north park!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success comes greatly from my yoga practice that has taught me new levels of perseverance and compassion.
