Meet Tammy Herron | Owner and Baker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tammy Herron and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tammy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Being a stay at home mom has always been my dream and priority. I wanted to start a business where I could work from home, make my own hours, only work part-time, and have fun in the process!

In 2019 we did a fundraiser to raise money for our daughter to go on her 8th grade trip to DC. We sold my homemade peanut butter chocolate chip cookies and we raised enough money to cover her entire trip! After the fundraiser was over people still wanted to buy cookies. That’s how Cookies Beyond Measure began.

With the California Homemade Food Act, known as “Cottage Food Operations”, certain low-risk food products that do not require refrigeration, such as cookies, bread, pie, fruit jam, and dried food, can be made in private home kitchens, and sold to consumers. This was the perfect opportunity for me to continue being a stay at home mom while making money to help our family financially.

In 2020 we became a licensed Cottage Food Operator and our business continues to grow to this day. We are so blessed to have the most wonderful customers and I am so happy that I can spread joy through cookies!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am passionate about making delicious, homemade, freshly baked cookies. I set myself apart from other home baking businesses by focusing 100% on cookies, my specialty. I can bake just about anything, but I wanted to focus all of my efforts on making one product that was extraordinary. I bake every order fresh, in small batches, with fresh ingredients.

Most of our business success has come from social media and word of mouth. Getting our cookies in the hands of local San Diegans was the most challenging part. We needed to get our name out there and establish a reputation that people can trust and return to for gourmet, homemade cookies time and time again.

We reached out to local Instagram influencers at the beginning and they were happy to share our cookies with their friends, family, and followers. Now our business is mostly word of mouth, which is such a blessing.

Cookies Beyond Measure is about spreading joy through cookies. When I see the smile on people’s faces as they enjoy our cookies, that is what makes it all worth it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Pacific Beach: Mt Soledad for sunrise, Kono’s for breakfast, Crystal Pier to look for dolphins, Donut Bar, Better Buzz for coffee and Acai Bowls.

Point Loma: Liberty Station Public Market for lunch, Cabrillo National Monument for amazing views, Point Loma Tide Pools, Dinner at Mitch’s for the freshest seafood, sunset at Sunset Cliffs

Ocean Beach: Hodad’s for burgers, Nico’s for Mexican, walk on the pier, lunch at the Pier Cafe.

La Jolla: visit the seals, relax at La Jolla Shores, lunch/dinner at Piatti Italian Restaurant, Torrey Pines hike, shopping on Prospect.

Downtown: California Creamery (the best ice cream!), Donut Bar (original location), Seaport Village for fun shops and a variety of restaurants.

Coronado: take the ferry over from downtown, lunch at the ferry landing, visit Hotel Del, watch sunset on the beach, rent a Surrey to cruise along the waterfront.

Old Town: for Mexican food and shopping!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost to God be the glory! Without Him I am nothing. He makes all things possible.

I would also like to thank my husband, Nate, and our daughters, Capri and Chloe. They have made our business a success behind the scenes. Nate designed our beautiful website and maintains it. He is also our finance guru, accountant, delivery driver, clean up crew and so much more. There’s so much that goes into a business behind the scenes and my family makes it smooth sailing for me. They give me constant encouragement and support and they are my biggest fans.
