We had the good fortune of connecting with Dasha Glozman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dasha, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is the reason I am where I am today. I was born in Russia and shortly after, my parents decided that they wanted to create a better life for our family. So my dad decided to take a leap of faith and come to America a year before the rest of us did, with just $120 to his name. He didn’t know what the future would hold and he barely spoke English, but he knew that he needed to take the risk in order to make a change. Working the car wash during the day, and driving taxi at night for years, he later went on to start a now multi-award winning HVAC company in San Diego. I always remember my parents sharing this story with me about how they sat on the couch one night, and counted their money, in shock that they had made their first $7,000. And the rest was history. Had he not taken the risk to move to America, none of this would have been possible.
Their story is the reason I think risk taking is so important, and the reason I choose to take risks in my own life over and over again. It’s not easy sometimes jumping into the unknown because it’s much more comfortable to stay with what feels familiar…at the end of the day, it’s less work. But I remind myself that the unknown is as terrifying as it is beautiful. Risk is a critical piece to unlocking something much greater than what’s already in front of you, if you believe in what’s ahead.
Last year, I took the biggest risk of my life, by quitting my corporate job and leaving my 6 figure salary behind in order to run my holistic health coaching business full time. Sure, I may have been able to build it on the side while still earning a solid income, but that would have meant my energy was split between two jobs. Honestly I was very scared to leave a job where I was comfortable and at a senior level. But I had a really deep rooted gut feeling that it was what I needed to do, because I had finally found my passion and true purpose, and wanted to put my best foot forward and run. So I took the risk, with my dad’s story in mind and started from scratch. And now, I have never been happier and more fulfilled in the work I do.
The way I see it, is if you really believe in something, you have a burning passion, or your gut is telling you there is more, follow that, and take the risk. The alternative is you do nothing, and nothing changes. Sure, there is always a chance it might not work out, but if you really want it and know why you want it, you can make it happen.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a holistic health coach, I help busy professionals create lasting health habits that feel easy, authentic and just plain right good in the body so they can show up in their lives with more energy, vitality and glowing confidence. With my clients, I dive into self-awareness work, stress management / resilience, mindful eating and movement, and sustainable habit building. I believe everyone deserves to feel their best everyday, and in order to show up for others, you first have to show up for yourself.
I offer 1:1 coaching all year long, lead group coaching programs twice a year, and facilitate corporate wellness workshops and webinars.
As someone who worked in a high stress, fast-paced environment of the corporate world at companies like Oracle and Tinuiti before starting my business, I know first hand how we can all be so good at prioritizing our jobs to succeed, that we can forget to prioritize ourselves along the way. Which is why I now love to work specifically with busy professionals who experience daily pressures, don’t always create the time for themselves, and may even experience burnout from time to time.
For years growing up, I dealt with my own slew of health issues including uncontrollable stress, digestive problems, acne, consistently low energy, and constant mood swings. My entire life, I thought it was normal. Skip to my first years in my corporate career, I decided to do a power yoga teacher training program on a whim, I just had a gut feeling that it felt right. It turned out to be the first pivotal point in my health journey. It was the first time I really spent the time turning inwards, getting curious with my own thoughts and quieting the mind. I grew more in love with the practice, and it became part of my everyday life. Committing to the inner work everyday in my life, my self-awareness and self-relationship had deepened so much and I felt so much more in tune with myself, that I started to take more interest in my lifestyle choices. By learning to take care of my body physically, mentally, and spiritually, I was finally able to hear myself for the first time. I was no longer running around on autopilot, but becoming more intentional with every decision, thought process, and behavior.
Learning to build stress resilience, establishing healthy habits that felt natural to me, cleaning up my diet, and moving my body in a more intuitive way, I slowly watched my once consuming health issues disappear. People were telling me that I glowed in a way that I had never heard before. I started to show up in the world in a new way. I had more energy and confidence and that became evident with how I was performing at work, showing up in my friendships, and feeling every single day. Paying attention to the body, mind and soul all at the same time helped me create this really solid foundation and balance in my physical body and life. And that’s when I knew that if I could do this for myself and feel the way I do now, I want to help others feel this way too.
I designed my signature program The Balanced Method with my own journey in mind. Apart from other coaching styles, my coaching style and program is unique because after working with various ambitious individuals, I have learned that you have to combine intuition with science in order to truly create sustainable change. As a certified power yoga instructor, I bring meditation, breath work and the yoga practice inside the program so that I’m not only suggesting a client to do these things, but also actively introducing them to it and having them put it into action. What really sets me apart as a coach, is that I really care. I am with my clients every step of the way, and my true goal is for them to walk away from the program and feel like they don’t need me anymore (even though I wish we could continue working together of course)!
As my business continues to grow and I continue to work with new clients, I learn from each one as much as they learn from me. It’s the most interesting part of the work that I do, knowing that every human is a bio individual and requires different things than the next. That’s why I always empower customization for each client. I don’t do meal plans, I don’t do workout programs, instead I teach every client how to listen to themselves and find what works for THEM.
There is nothing that makes my heart more full than hearing a client tell me that working with me has changed their life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is such an amazing city!
Great places to eat/drink that I would call an “absolute must” include…
* Zinque for a nice french-inspired lunch
* Davanti Enoteca in Little Italy for dinner because they have a divine focaccia bread with soft cheese and honeycomb that warms the soul.
* Carruth Cellars Wine Garden for a glass of wine and exquisite cheese board platter
* Cava for a more casual Mediterranean meal
* Buona Forchetta (South Park) for the best Italian food!
* Madison for brunch
* Parakeet Cafe
* Communal Coffee for a nice latte
Places I would take my friend include…
*Balboa Park – it’s my favorite place in all of San Diego filled with Museums, parks, greenery, and gardens like the Japanese Friendship Garden.
*La Jolla shores – it’s wildly stunning and relaxing to walk around.
*Encinitas / Leucadia – beautiful look out points to the water, great restaurants like Nectarine Grove, The Roxy, and even fun breweries like Saint Archer and Culture Brewing.
*Del Mar – 15th street
*Little Italy Farmer’s market on Saturdays paired with a walk near the downtown bay
*Sunset Cliffs – breathtaking sunsets and views from the cliff side. We’d take our bikes through OB, get Mexican food at Mike’s Taco Stand, and ride all the way to sunset cliffs to eat on the rocks and hangout!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A BIG shoutout to my business coach, mentor, and friend Samantha Bove, who has been my light and guide from Day 1 of starting my business. Her and her program ZenBoss Academy have given me everything that I need to start my business, maintain it, and feel confident and easeful through every launch period that I have. Her approach is so unique because it combines spirituality with business, which has allowed me to feel so true to myself the entire time, and has just made the process of building a business so fun!
