We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyong Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyong, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Mainly because my creative talents are what I’m am most confident about. I have always loved creating art. My mind is always churning over ideas. I am constantly thinking about the next thing I want to try to make. It would be hard to imagine having a career that didn’t include artistic creativity. I simply love working with my hands, and trying to use my hands to make the things that float around in my head a reality.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At this current stage of my artistic career, I find myself experimenting with original cake decorating techniques which include pattern creation using a crafting/candy making technique which incorporates the creation of canes. As far as I know, I’m the only one using this method on cakes. It’s my originality that sets me apart.

During quarantine, I began creating tutorials for my social media because I had a lot of spare time. They’ve been well received and I have really enjoyed experimenting. It’s so cool to hear the positive feedback from people. My favorite comments are the ones that say I’ve inspired them to experiment too, and I also love hearing how parents enjoy watching my videos with their kids. It’s so heartwarming to hear.

Getting to where I am today has been a long road, but I wouldn’t say it’s been hard. It’s been fun actually. I’ve made so many friends, some of my best friends started as my coworkers. I’ve laughed so much and learned countless skills. I’m beyond thankful that I found the world of cakes because it incorporates so much of what I love. It seems to be tailored fit for me! There are fast deadlines, which means I don’t have to focus on one project for too long. I get to use my hands to make the cutest things. Every week is different and keeps me from getting bored. And I get to be part of happy celebrations! What more could I ask for?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that I have to stay true to myself, even if people think I should be doing something else. I’ve been asked so many times, “why don’t you open your own bakery?” In the past, I’ve let that question get under my skin a little. I’ve wondered whether or not I should be striving for that. But I know myself better now, and the truth is, I don’t want to own my own bakery. I’m not interested in customer service or managing employees. I just want to focus on the artistic creation. That is what brings me joy. I create during my day job as a cake artist, and I create on my time off as a content creator. I have to follow my bliss.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a hard question for me because I’m such a homebody! But I live close to Disneyland and I’ve loved it there since I went every summer with my family as a child, so there are some strong nostalgic ties there. I would also take them to gorge on some Korean bbq for sure. Most likely, we’d hang out at the Orange Circle which is full of quaint shops and places to eat. And shocker, I’m a big fan of museums so I would take them to one of the many museums in LA.

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
I would have to say the first person who supported my artistic expressions was my dad. I would make silly drawings and he would light up whenever I gave them to him. He never threw any of them away, and he hung them all over his bathroom walls. Seeing him beam with pride made me feel proud of myself, and I just wanted to keep creating.
