We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Ferreira and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sofia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been photographing all my life. I grew up photographing on film, delved into digital for some years, but back in 2011, I decided to purchase a film camera. That decision changed my life. It changed how I was seeing the world. Fast-forward to today and I have been photographing on film for 10 years. At the beginning of 2021, I had a baby and it was during my maternity leave that I decided to invest in some sort of photographic career. I started my film photography business mid-pandemic at the end of the summer of 2021 after spending the better part of 2021 taking a course on branding with Liz Mosley (“Build Your Own Branding“). That course increased the confidence needed to launch my business and I haven’t regretted it since.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I always start by saying I’m a marine biologist, not only because I am very proud and happy of being one, but also because that is my full-time job. It also proves that I have absolutely no training whatsoever in the arts. So all my art is completely free of any molds. Having a full-time job and being a mom means I have little time left to delve into my creativity. I try my best to integrate a creative approach with my kids, but that has limitations at times. Film photography is thus one of my streams of creativity. It is something that allows me to be completely free to express what I am feeling.

My film photography journey re-started in 2011, but it has been slow, exactly because I only do it part-time. I like the setup I have and I wouldn’t change it. The fact that it is slow probably explains why it took me 10 years to take it seriously, gain confidence and set up a proper business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have moved a lot! Like A LOT! And not just cities, but countries. I live in Aarhus, Denmark, at the moment. We moved here in July 2021, so it is not easy to answer this question as I probably am still exploring it myself. From what I know about Aarhus is that it is “hygge” as hell, has great coffee, great swimming spots, and forests but, if I had to provide an answer for a day visit, I would say: start the day watching the sunrise at Aarhus Ø with a coffee from Otaku or Street Coffee from Bassin 7, then head to a forest walk at Risskov, and spend the afternoon at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum. Then perhaps a spa visit to Spanien, ending the day with dinner and drinks at Aarhus Street Food. Oh and rent a bike to do all this so you get the full experience, of course.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I wouldn’t have had to courage to launch my business had it not been from my wolf pack! The Analogue Wolf Pack is a group of 12 like-minded females wanting to learn more about film photography. We have a lot in common, yet we are all different. They support me in every step even though I have never met them in person. So if there is a group of people I am grateful for that is them. Thank you, guys! My Wolf Pack are:
