We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsey, what do you want your legacy to be?
Since I was a young girl, I have had this sense of pressure to do more, and be more, which is a challenge I’ve realized many women face, a sense of insecurity we are not “enough”. Because of this pressure I felt to be something BIG, I thought for a long time that my direction would be fame. I was clearly destined to be a rockstar, right? But, as life would have it, I took a very different path which led me to a new and even better direction. While all of my life I wanted to be remembered for something, to be a person who leaves a mark on this world, I no longer yearned for fame, but rather wished to leave my mark by helping those in need by starting a non-profit. I wanted to build some thing to help others, to create a safe space, encourage, motivate and lift up other women. This all stems from my career as a hairstylist the past 11 years. I absolutely love being behind the chair every day. I feel so lucky that I get to be creative and my clients trust me with not just their hairstyle, but also their personal lives. Over the years, I get to learn about their careers, families, children, yet also their struggles and hardships. However, in the moments that I am behind the chair and they are in front of me, it brings me such joy to create a moment for them to feel beautiful inside and out, which is hands down the best part of my job. These moments made me realize I want to share this feeling with more women, which is one of the largest goals through the non-profit. I have two beautiful children, and years ago I suffered from post partum depression after my son was born. I have been, and always will be very open about that time in my life. I do not feel ashamed about when I needed to ask for help. Looking back on it now I see that it was a fragile time of true vulnerability for my heart and mind. With the pandemic this past year and having more time spent at home, I came up with a true purpose for leaving my mark on the world, and so was born the non-profit “What You Deserve”. Our goal is to promote positive self image and mental wellness for Moms. It’s been an incredibly long journey for me to get to this place, but I finally feel that I have found a greater purpose. I do not have the dream to be a rockstar anymore. Someday when I leave this earth I want to be remembered as a woman who always gave more than she took. I want to help open the doors of communication for new and seasoned moms with post partum depression. I want to help as many women as I can reach. Most importantly, I want to be a role model of strength and compassion for my daughter and others to follow.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Is anything in life easy? I think we all know the answer to that question. I feel like my journey has been a series of turns and forks in the road. I am most proud of not necessarily where I am today, but who I am today. I believe there is always room for growth and improvement. I am proud of who I have become because I have grown into self-love and I want to give to others. I love being involved in my community. They have embraced me with such passion and support. It motivates me to give back. I feel like I am a very accepting and open person. Everyone has something positive to contribute no matter what their background, social status or lifestyle may be. I want the world to know that I’m here to make a difference.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In this fantasy there is no Covid: I have small kids so I would take my best friend to do something with the kids in the day time. We would go to any of the amazing parks, or the beach. Then we would all grab lunch at one of the local spots. At night, enjoy some kid free time in downtown San Diego. During that week we would hit the zoo, The Sugar Factory, and the children’s museum. We would go and catch some local music at Humphreys by the bay, and also make sure to have cocktails on the deck at George’s at the Cove.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my response to all the women and mom’s who have gone before me. They have paved the path for me to follow. Also, my husband and children who love and support me every day.
