We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Curry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is such an important element of leadership. If you are not taking risks, you are not embracing opportunities to grow, change, or move your business or organization to the next level. All too often, people can become set in their ways and in their environment. If they do not innovate, seek new avenues to challenge their thinking, the business can go stagnate and the joy once experienced by the leaders and workforce can be gone. Risk is also the fuel that many need to feel that their ideas and efforts are contributing to the company’s success. When a team member is sharing, giving their perspective and insight is often the catalyst that contributes to those risks being taken. When a business is unwilling or unable to fold risk taking into annual activities and planning, that business will find themselves in a position of not being innovative or even obsolete. Leaders in general are better served when they have an undeveloped sense of fear and this leads to decision making that often places risk at the center of many business-related discussions. This is healthy, needed, exciting and a chance to push the business or organization to the forefront with competition and innovation. Risk is all about managing expectations when seen in contrast to growth and success.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am honored to be the CEO for The Classical Academies in North San Diego County. Having helped start the organization in 1999, I have managed the growth from one site with 200 students to seven locations with 5,800+ students TK-12th grade. There have been so many challenges along the way and it is a personal reminder that hard work and determination can be fulfilling, exasperating, and a testament to never giving up. You have to keep your eye on the goal and embrace the fact that there are many ways to hit the target you are pursuing. Some days are harder than others and just when you think you have arrived, a new challenge or opportunity will arise to catch you off guard or remind you that success is not a destination, but rather a sense of deep accomplishment or personal satisfaction. Be humble enough to know without a great team you cannot do it yourself! Plus, without providing a vision, your team will not rise to the many challenges that come and you will collectively find yourselves disheartened, frustrated, and defeated. Celebrate often, elevate employee praise regularly, and never take yourself too seriously. Be the leader you wanted or needed in your career growth because you know what worked and didn’t work for you. Success is always a shared experience because you did not achieve it on your own.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Spending time in and around Little Italy is always time well spent. I love the shops, the food, and it’s close location to the San Diego Bay where you can catch a water taxi, see the Star of India, or just walk and enjoy the sunset. Such a great place here in the region and one that I often frequent for a meal, stroll, or beautiful conversation with a friend or loved one.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The team at The Classical Academies inspires and challenges me everyday. Their collective enthusiasm, passion, and drive to make great things happen for students is admirable and honorable. This team of people has sacrificed so much to ensure that students think, communicate, and achieve and our community is better for it as a result! Great people serving others sets the example, and their accomplishments are a testament to what committed to quality and practicing excellence looks like!
