Meet Evan Odom | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Odom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I have always been a very active person. Most of the lessons I learned as an oarsman for Marietta College have lent well in the world. In rowing; there are very few days off, precision and dedication are staple requirements, and there are teammates who are relying on you to deliver.
Being a freelance photographer takes constant work, and the need to deliver efficiently and quickly. The job can be physically demanding, and so having healthy ways to prepare and recover from that type of work is very important to me. Besides keeping a good fitness regime, I do my best to read and consume more traditional media instead of algorithmic social media feeds.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My personal work is very broad and constantly evolving. But at he core I am trying to show that the world is still beautiful and the people who occupy it are good. One of my more exciting projects was Central Coast, which was a solo exhibition of the central coast of California. No people were in frame, but I made sure to have some type of structure or construction in each piece, surrounded by either the ocean or the landscape of coastal California.
I am still navigating the professional side of things on a commercial level, but that is from a quickly changing and evolving world more than anything else.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s San Diego, it is the best metro in the country, best weather, beast beaches, mid food, bad traffic. I am not the one to make an itinerary, much more of a drop in a spot and make a day. So Balboa I guess?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give thanks to the Palomar College Photographic department. There I was able to bridge the gaps i felt were present for me to become a much more knowledgeable photographer, and understand the history, science, and philosophy of photography as a visual medium.
