We had the good fortune of connecting with Valeriia Telemaniuk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Valeriia, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success and the growth of my brand is consistency combined with authenticity. From the very beginning of my journey — first as a nail artist in Ukraine, then in New York, and now as the founder of Altera Nails in San Diego — I’ve stayed true to my values: high quality, education, and a personalized approach to every client.

I work only with professional-grade products and follow advanced European techniques, because I truly believe that clients can feel the difference when services are done with passion and expertise. But what really helped my brand stand out is that I always take time to connect with each person who walks into my studio. I don’t just create nails — I create a full experience of care, comfort, and trust.

Another key factor is my dedication to continuous learning and international certification. I never stop improving my skills — whether it’s judging global competitions, mentoring students, or learning from top educators. This mindset not only shaped my reputation but gave my brand a level of credibility that clients truly value.

Ultimately, I believe people don’t just choose a service — they choose a person and a story behind it. Staying honest, consistent, and passionate about what I do has made all the difference.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m the founder of Altera Nails, a private nail studio in San Diego that specializes in premium-quality manicures and pedicures using European techniques and top-tier Ukrainian materials. My brand stands out because it combines expertise, strict hygiene, continuous education, and a truly personal approach. I don’t just do nails — I create an experience where clients feel cared for, safe, and valued.

My journey hasn’t been easy. I moved to the U.S. from Ukraine in 2023, started over in New York, and later relocated to California to open my own studio. I had to rebuild everything from scratch — my client base, my reputation, and my confidence — in a new country, in a new language, and in a completely different market. But my professionalism and more than 9 years of experience helped me overcome these challenges.

Today, I’m proud to say that I am a certified beauty industry judge by IBJA, an official judge at the IBATAJ Global Talent Beauty Cup, and a Level 3 accredited specialist in the international KCCK certification system. These achievements have not only boosted my personal confidence but also given my brand a level of credibility that allows me to charge fairly and attract a loyal, conscious clientele.

What I want the world to know is that Altera Nails is more than just a salon — it’s a space built on integrity, high standards, and a deep passion for the craft. I believe in elevating the nail industry and supporting other professionals through education and encouragement.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit San Diego, I’d make sure they fall in love with this city just like I did. Here’s what the perfect week would look like:

Day 1: We’d start with a beach day at La Jolla Cove — watching sea lions, taking beautiful cliffside photos, and walking along the shoreline. In the evening, we’d enjoy dinner with a sunset view at Duke’s La Jolla.

Day 2: A full day at the famous San Diego Zoo — one of the best in the world. It’s not just about animals, it’s about atmosphere and memories. Afterward, we’d grab an early dinner or cocktail at Panama 66 inside Balboa Park.

Day 3: Off to Coronado Island — we’d take a relaxing walk along the beach, go jet skiing with downtown views (unforgettable!), and then visit the iconic Hotel del Coronado. To top it off, ice cream by the ocean at sunset.

Day 4: Time for a little adventure! In the morning, we’d hike the Torrey Pines Reserve, then refresh with smoothies from Better Buzz. Dinner that night would be in the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter.

Day 5: A beachy fun day at Pacific Beach. We’d walk the boardwalk, soak in the laid-back surfer vibes, grab a snack, and then spend the afternoon at Belmont Park — the oceanfront amusement park full of rides, music, and nostalgia.

Day 6: We’d spend the day at SeaWorld San Diego — enjoying dolphin and orca shows, exciting rides, and learning more about marine life. After the park, we’d head to Liberty Public Market at Liberty Station for dinner — it’s one of my favorite food courts in the city, offering flavors from around the world in a lively, welcoming setting.

Day 7: On the final day, we’d explore Downtown San Diego — stroll through Seaport Village, browse the local shops, relax by the bay, and finish with dinner at one of the chic waterfront restaurants. A perfect way to say goodbye to this beautiful city.

There’s something magical about San Diego — the balance of nature, ocean, culture, and sunshine. I think everyone leaves a little in love with it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my husband — his belief in me never wavered, even when I had doubts. His support gave me the courage to start over in a new country and build something meaningful from scratch.

I also want to thank my mentors and teachers in the nail industry, especially those in Ukraine, who taught me not only strong technique but also discipline, standards, and creativity. And finally, a big shoutout to my loyal clients — their trust and love have been the fuel behind my every step.
