We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Wendt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christopher, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The original thought process behind starting my own business was to be my own boss. I was tired of the 8 to 5 working for irresponsible companies that only cared about financial gains and profits rather than client.
Working with unresponsive coworkers that lacked work ethic and experience etc
Also the lack of control over my schedule and free time and inability to feel that I could live a life, happy joyous, and free on my own terms
In reality, I wanted to be more in control of my own employment status. I was tired of working for others that I felt didn’t appreciate my hard work and needed to make more money after all we work to live not live to work. I want to also have the ability to be more available for my family and realized or actually just woke up one day and decided that I’ve had enough
Of course, there were a lot of other factors as well, but to actually be my own boss to have my own company a sense of pride satisfaction and guarantee that I knew where I’d be working next
Also, as a sole proprietor, I only have to be responsible for myself, and this is a huge factor. It was about the independence of being a business. Owner provided me and gave me an opportunity for freedom to be more in control of my employment status and it’s also the American dream it’s the pinnacle of employment to be your own boss and really I came to realize that I just didn’t play well with others that I had expectations. Nobody seemed to satisfy my needs as an employee so therefore, I figured I had to take things into my own hands.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Wendt Designs is an all around construction business from ADU’s to new construction to custom remodels to home repair service
What sets myself and my business apart is I’m going to operate with integrity and exercise true craftsmanship and complete task to California building code and law
I like to improve lifestyles through my creative nature and working with my hands and knowledge of building and construction. Also designing bathrooms or kitchens is an art and takes a skill set I enjoy implementing into my projects
I always enjoyed art and drafting as a kid and have a very creative mind and imagination the ability to learn and understand how things work together and form complete harmony has always been enjoyable to me
The ability to take care of clients is a main priority to me and satisfying their needs wants and desires
I appreciate my clients after all they have invited me into their homes their sanctuary and I hope to benefit them and provide a quality product and service that they will love and enjoy and share with friends and family
Wendt Designs started out as a neighborhood handyman service
Initially, it was tough to start, but within my very optimistic nature and my hard work ethic, I knew that I could make something of my small Handyman business with the Help of friends family and neighbor’s It started slowly, and I worked for a lower wage until I initially got my name out word-of-mouth is the butter to my bread as it is in most construction businesses, especially if you’re operating with integrity Also social media helped advertise and market my business and such local app such as next-door helped tremendously I chose to start working on a lower wage and chose to work harder working longer days seven days a week to offer my services to gain clientele
There are plenty of ups and downs in the construction industry. The nature of what we do is nasty and unforgiving, and will punch you in the face and you have to show up the next day to keep working on it. There’s always problems like I said the nature of what we do is unforgiving, you need to be resilient and work hard to find solutions to daily problems. It’s a very uncontrolled environment, so you need to do your best to roll with the flow and make the best of every situation A job never goes easy there’s always bumps in the road, but trying to be as efficient as possible, staying on task learning to communicate with your clients being open honest and willing I have found is the best motto and policy within our industry
Being fully transparent works best as contractors and construction in general have retained a reputation for being irresponsible or incompetent in regards to communication and finances
Bottom line and motto of my business is improving lifestyles through craftsmanship and integrity. This will always be my goal and I appreciate all my clients

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love where I live. San Marcos is a great town I truly enjoy San Marcos as it still has its rural areas along with great places to eat plenty of parks and is not inundated or overcrowded yet
With it just being 20 or 30 minutes to the beach you still have coastal access I like the weather in San Marcos. The temperature is 80° 90° in the summer a little bit warmer than the coast and as I age I enjoy this. I also enjoy the neighborhoods in the kind people in San Marcos
town is changing quite a bit with the new Campos that was built recently, but that’s the nature of Southern California. We’re always growing and getting bigger.
I also enjoy North County. I’ve lived here for 40+ years. I grew up in Encinitas. Carlsbad is another phenomenal town lots of entertainment lots of great places to eat lots of night activity great family area and beaches

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d give a shout out to Brian Corcoran from Corcoran construction in Menifee, California
Brian and I had been friends for 35 years. He’s definitely a mentor to me in the construction industry. He’s also a true craftsman taught me a tremendous amount about structural integrity and framing and just the ins and outs of finish carpentry. He’s a talented all around tradesmen and a phenomenal friend. We work together for a handful of years and continuing remain friends and support one another and all our endeavors and when I’m in need, he comes to help me with projects of larger scale.
