Meet Sequoia Gorham | Creative Director & Balloon Stylist, Say Something Events

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sequoia Gorham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sequoia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Say Something Events was truly born out of love during a time when the world felt really uncertain. At the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns, my husband and I had four young children with birthdays coming up, and I was determined not to let the chaos of the world take away their joy. I wanted them to feel seen, celebrated, and special, so I started creating big, custom balloon décor and themed setups based on whatever they were into at the time. It gave them something magical to look forward to, and it gave me a sense of purpose.
I’ve always been a creative person at heart, a DIY’er, a problem solver, someone who finds joy in making things beautiful and people happy. I have a degree in Visual Communications from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. While I originally planned to pursue wardrobe styling, life took me in a different direction. But in many ways, I’m still using that degree every day, just with balloons, decor, and celebration spaces instead of clothing.
As more people saw my work, especially after I started creating setups for my mom’s company and her corporate events, the momentum started to build. I realized not only was I really good at this, but I genuinely loved it. I kept practicing, learning, and pushing myself creatively, and eventually, I took a leap of faith, put my trust in God and officially launched Say Something Events. From the start, it was a hit, people connected with my style and the heart I put into every detail.
For me, it’s never just about making things look pretty. I want every setup to “Say Something”, to reflect the people being celebrated and the emotion behind the moment. Whether it’s a birthday, baby shower, or grand opening, my goal is always to help people feel seen, loved, and celebrated in unforgettable ways.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For me, balloons aren’t just decorations, they’re art! They’re my paint, my texture, my way of storytelling. I see every event as a blank canvas, and I use balloons to create visual experiences that bring joy, spark emotion, and leave people saying, “Wow, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
What sets Say Something Events apart is the intention behind every setup. I don’t just show up and blow up balloons into a shape, I design with meaning. Every arch, garland, or backdrop is customized to reflect the story or celebration behind it. Whether it’s a little girl’s first birthday or a big corporate launch, I want the decor to feel personal, beautiful, and unforgettable.
My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been so worth it. Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without my faith. I truly believe God blessed me with this gift. Every opportunity, every connection, every idea, it’s all been divinely ordered. There were moments of doubt, seasons of discouragement, and times I wanted to give up, but God has continued to show up for me, open doors, and remind me that I’m walking in my purpose.
I’ve learned that success isn’t always instant, but when you stay consistent, trust the process, and keep your heart in the right place, beautiful things will bloom. What I want the world to know is that Say Something Events is about more than balloons. It’s about celebrating people! It’s about turning ordinary moments into extraordinary memories, and I feel incredibly grateful to do that through the gifts God has given me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to town, the beach would be first on the list and honestly, any beach in Cali will do! There’s just something about the sun, sand, and ocean breeze that instantly makes you feel good.
Next up: food because San Diego does not play when it comes to good eats. I love Mexican food, and in my opinion, nowhere does it better than San Diego. My all-time favorite spot is Anita’s in Oceanside, and a close second is Brother’s Mexican Restaurant in North Park. If we’re craving soul food or BBQ, I’m taking them straight to Felix’s BBQ with Soul, Tony’s Fish & Chips, or Coop’s BBQ, all heavy-hitters!
For brunch, Breakfast Republic is a must, they have the best French toast ever. And we’d definitely explore some local shops, museums, and community events because there’s always something happening out here. If the timing is right, I’d hope Soul Sunday is going on at Quartyard, it’s one of my favorite events. Live band, live singers, amazing energy it’s just a whole vibe!
And of course, Sunday means church. I’d take them to Greater Life Church because I truly believe in keeping God at the center of everything.
Honestly, there’s never not something to do in San Diego. Whether you’re into art, food, music, or just want to relax and take it all in, this city has it. And I’m still discovering new spots myself!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost I have to give all honor to God! God has blessed me with the creativity of both my mind and hands, as well as so many opportunities and for that, I am truly thankful. Then hands down, my husband and my mom. They’ve both played a huge role in shaping the entrepreneur I am today, not just through their encouragement, but through their own examples. Watching them build their businesses over the years has been inspiring, and I’ve had the privilege of working alongside both of them.
My husband is a creative through and through, he’s a brand consultant and the owner of The Gorham Agency. From the very beginning, he believed in my vision and made sure I had a professional, polished brand. He designed all of my branding for Say Something Events and even had me design balloon décor for one of his events. Perks of being married to a creative designer lol!
My mom is the #1 etiquette and lifestyle expert in the world and the owner of The Swann School of Protocol. She’s been a mentor, encourager, and fun fact, my very first (and ongoing) client. I had the chance to practice and grow by creating setups for her corporate events, which really helped build my confidence and skill set.
Both of them have poured into me in moments of uncertainty or discouragement, offering advice and reminding me of what I’m capable of. Their love and support have been the backbone of my journey, and I’m endlessly grateful for them.
