We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Covarrubias and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I wouldn’t avidly say I am a risk taker, but when I started this business I had no choice but TO take a risk. I decided not to return to my job in the pandemic, I started applying to jobs and wasn’t hearing back, businesses were closing and I needed some way to create an income so at that point it was definitely a “now or never” moment.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a social media manager so much of my job is also content creation and I think the thing I am most proud of is really trying to understand my clients on such a personal level that I can get into creating strategy and a brand voice that suits them and doesn’t force anything out of someone. I want my clients to feel so absolutely comfortable as themselves in order to best represent their business and I am super proud of that in a world where everyone is trying to project a version of themselves online.

SO MANY LESSONS, for starters I cannot work with anyone who I can’t connect with their brand/mission/personality especially because I treat each business and each account I manage as my own. I think the one thing I’m constantly trying to communicate to my clients and through my content on social is that you CAN accomplish any little thing you want and that I believe fiercely in growing the small business, I believe there IS space for people to be entrepreneurs and that their idea and passions matter. Essentially my business isn’t just the technical but so much of it is rewriting the idea of entrepreneurialism and that its not “tired” or “dusty” or something you say when you don’t have much going on, being a business owner is tough and believing in a dream and working toward that is still very much an uncommon thing. I’m proud to be part of peoples’ support systems.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s got to be the east village for me! I know its not the North or South Park but, east village and downtown San Diego has the waterfront, seaport, eateries, coffee shops, etc. I would have to say Gaslamp Breakfast Company on J., Blue bottle or Spill the beans for quick coffee, street strolling and content creating along the way.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As an adult I’ve had way more mentors than ever, even if they were just people who shared some form of advice or wisdom in passing, I have a couple pastor friends who definitely shaped my confidence in myself and would often tell me that I should pursue a career in social media and just consistently encouraged and affirmed that so I felt supported stepping out of my comfort zone.
