We had the good fortune of connecting with Antoinette Love Ransom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Antoinette Love, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The most challenging aspect of my role as the Director of Media Relations is finding the right clients. On top of that, the job demands a high level of multitasking and the ability to go beyond your everyday responsibilities. For those unfamiliar with the role, a Director of Media Relations is responsible for managing and enhancing the public image of an organization or client by developing effective media strategies, building relationships with media outlets, and ensuring consistent, positive media coverage. The main challenge lies in ensuring the client’s brand is portrayed in a positive, clear, and easily identifiable way. While many clients want me to represent them, not all align with the standards I’m looking for. As a small business owner, I’ve learned through trial and error to be selective about whom I collaborate with. Sometimes a client will offer a reasonable retainer, and the income would be helpful, but not all money is good money. Prioritizing what’s best for your client over your own financial gain is essential.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I want people to know that my business is versatile, offering a wide range of services, including business development and consulting, insurance consulting, PR and media consulting, brand development and strategy, digital marketing, SEO/SEM strategies, and securing corporate sponsors for TV and film productions, as well as high-profile events. I started out as an artist who didn’t fully grasp the business side of the entertainment industry. To bridge that gap, I interned with various productions and completed my MBA in Strategic Marketing. This experience not only set me on the right path but also gave me a deeper understanding of contracts and proposals. I learned to negotiate and even counter offers when contracts were skewed in favor of others rather than myself. Many people don’t realize that a “one-sided” contract often doesn’t hold up in court. Another important lesson I’ve learned is that being busy doesn’t necessarily mean being productive. Remember, you can run in place without making progress. To me, productivity is about securing paid clients or gigs, developing strategies to effectively promote your clients, and mentoring local college students who aspire to careers in PR, entertainment industry, consulting, or marketing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When friends come to visit me in San Diego, CA, I like to create a unique and memorable agenda tailored to their interests. For instance, a friend of mine who loves wine, great food, and unique activities recently visited. I suggested we start the day with breakfast at “Queenstown” in Little Italy, where they serve a Bloody Mary that looks like a salad in a glass. Pair that with some avocado toast, or if you’re a meat lover, try the “Wagyu” Smashburger. Afterward, we could take a stroll through Balboa Park to enjoy the beautiful gardens and museums. For an early dinner, I recommended “The Seventh House,” where you can enjoy a meat and cheese board with complimentary wine or champagne. We prefer lighter dinners, so we don’t feel too tired afterward. To end the day, catching a comedy show or some live music would be perfect. If we have a few days, there are plenty of fantastic wineries in Southern California we could explore, like South Coast Winery or Avensole Winery. We could also visit a camel farm in Ramona to feed the camels and even go for a camel ride.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
