We had the good fortune of connecting with Chase Lirley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chase, how do you think about risk?
Risk and reward are typically used in the same breath. Starting a business, or expanding one, takes great risk and should curate great reward. No matter how large or small it may feel, risk is necessary to succeed. I’ve began to feel that every move or change that is made to the business is another risk. I risk upsetting my regulars when I need to remove an item from the menu. I risk upsetting my staff when we need to work more special events. I even risk upsetting myself when I make a mistake. With all the risks in my life and career I learn from each one, and I learn more from the ones that ultimately failed. When approaching risk you always need to balance out the reward with what you’re losing, fairly obvious. For me it’s typically the thought of ‘If this fails what’s the worst that’ll happen? Am I okay with that?’ If I feel okay with it, I risk it. If I don’t I’ll adjust accordingly. I take this same thought process through everything I do. I’ve become a far more positive person from it and surprise myself most of the time!

What should our readers know about your business?
Rockets Pizza and Subs came out of nowhere for me. It was one of those ‘spur of the moment’ chances you don’t want to miss. Being a local in the same neighborhood as my business only pushes me to make it even better! I want to be that local spot everyone loves to go to and feels welcomed. We always do a special pie of the month that can be crazy or simple! But it’s one of our regular’s favorite things to keep checking on. Starting the restaurant was no easy task. My father had always wanted a sandwich shop and when the lease was available we took it! The hard part was figuring out the whole pizza side. With help from our community we made it happen though.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If it’s a weekend and they land Friday night….
-We go to clairemont mesa and get some KBBQ. Then we go to a dive bar near where they are staying.
-Saturday we hike torrey pines and then head to the beach for a quick lunch(has to be hole in the wall burritos). After that maybe we stroll fashion valley and grab a movie and then Saturday night we go to gaslamp for drinks.
-Sunday morning we go to DZ akins and hangout around the san diego bay before dropping them at the airport.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father will always be the man who made it all possible. He started the first shop and mentored me through everything! I’m here to carry the torch!
