We had the good fortune of connecting with Bethany Oberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bethany, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I don’t often take risks, but when I do I make sure it’s something that I’ve thought a lot about and that it’s something I want to do 1000%, no matter what the outcome might be. I think the universe has a way of telling us when we’re ready for things, for me it’s when I have an idea that I can’t stop think about. Or maybe something I was once excited for, didn’t do at the time, and now it’s coming to my mind again. I would like to start taking more risks career-rise, and that has definitely started with launching ‘Bethany’s Bakes’, because I didn’t have everything how I wanted before I started it, but I convinced myself I didn’t have a choice and it’s been working out great so far!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Ive only recently considered myself a creative person and I’ve realized creativity shows up in so many different ways. I am most excited to continue to learn, push my boundaries in a healthy way and hopefully meet like-minded people along the way. It has not been easy at all. Whomever said creative people need time to do nothing, they’re absolutely correct. We need time to get outside, breathe, rot, exercise, etc, and be around things that might spark creativity. When you’re tired or exhausted, you don’t have the energy to be creative.
To ask for help is one of the greatest things that you could ever do for yourself. People love and support you and you’d be surprised at who might leap at the chance to make your life a tiny bit easier. I look forward to continue learning new bakes and new processes, even if that leads me away from baking one day, that’s okay.
I would like the world to know that my brand/business is just a premature little baby, it might be extravagant bakes one day for sale or a cook book or blog, although I haven’t set those goals for myself yet, I am open to it all. My current goal has been to average one bake order per week, which I have been achieving! The next goal is 3-4/week by this time next year and I am so excited to see where this all takes me!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Breakfast would be Relic Bageri pop-up in Mira Mesa with some coffee from Blue Bottle, then we would head up to La Jolla Cove for a walk and to see the seals and sea lions. For dinner we would go to The Taco Stand or The Smoking Goat in South Park, followed by drinks at the Lafayette Hotel. For a hangover breakfast, head back up to the cove for Harry’s coffee shop! It’s the best old-school diner in San Diego by far. Walk nearby to Paru for matcha and to stroll the book stores and shops around before heading downtown waterfront to hit up Miguel’s for dinner- they’re right on the water!
On Saturdays you have to go to the harbor house in little Italy for breakfast and then walk over to their farmers market for the morning. If you have the time, Swamis beach in Encinitas is one of the best to spend the day at. I could keep going honestly, there’s so much to do in San Diego!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! My parents have given me the courage to do anything that I set my mind to, not everyone has such pillars as parents and I’m very lucky to have them. Also, my roommate/platonic life partner Keila, she helps me in so many ways- even with baking if I ask her!
