We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Cortes-Graham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I like this topic and question because I do not believe in “work/life balance.” As a coach with a Master’s in languages and linguistics, I learned how language can shape our thinking. When we use the word “balance,” we often imagine a scale or a see-saw with two sides, one representing work and the other representing life. However, this is not accurate. Work is essential to our lives, constantly exchanging emotions, thoughts, challenges, obstacles, and more. If your child is sick, worrying about them at work is natural. Similarly, if you’ve had a bad day at work, it’s easy to bring that negative energy home. We’ve always been told to strive for balance, but the truth is that the idea of achieving perfect balance is unrealistic and often promoted by corporations. The real solution is to learn how to create boundaries between your personal and professional life. For instance, I work from home, and when I step out of my office, I leave work behind me. This helps me maintain a healthy balance between my work and personal life. If I could draw my idea, it would be a big circle representing LIFE. Inside of it would be smaller circles representing different aspects of my life, with work being one of them. Each person’s LIFE circle and internal circles would probably have different sizes.

What should our readers know about your business?
I began my career as a language instructor at a young age. During that time, I acquired excellent interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, and an in-depth understanding of various subjects. Later, I obtained a certification as an E-500 hours yoga instructor, which broadened my perspective in many ways. Becoming a coach and founding One Mind 22 came to fruition naturally after over a decade of interacting with and teaching individuals and several degrees and certifications. I am proud of my journey but also humble to accept that we all have problems, obstacles, fears, and an immense love for life. Sometimes, we are just not well-equipped to deal with all of that. I overcame my challenges with the unwavering support of my family and friends who never judged me. That is one of my coaching recipes: unconditional support without judgment. And it works…

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have had a best friend since the age of two. We share the same values, loves, and interests. We don’t live in the same city, so when she visits, we usually go out to eat and visit the art museum, coffee shops, and bookstores. Additionally, we love taking long walks and sharing memories, stories, and ideas while enjoying the beauty of the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my daughter Martina, husband Stacey, and son Matias. They have always believed in my potential, art, and professionalism, even before I did. They supported me unconditionally when I was ready for a change. I also want to acknowledge everyone I have met during these years. Through them, I have learned about my aspirations, work ethic, and ambition. Sometimes, through tough situations and interactions.
