We had the good fortune of connecting with osmar Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi osmar, how do you think about risk?
I think that any person that is an entrepreneur is a risk taker. the uncertainty of opening a business and not having a steady income is a high risk. When I decided to quit my job to pursue what i love to do, it took me through a huge mental struggle. The fear of not being able to support myself was very much present, but the fear of failing was greater. it was that fear that made failing not be an option and it allowed me to take the risk. Taking risk is the only way to grow, it is recognizing the fear and to fully trust yourself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Having passion in what you do plays a huge part in being successful. Loving what you do will make it easier when dealing with long workdays and late nights trying to finish customer orders. its the passion that ensures that you put your best effort in your work, because at the end of the day it’s not about getting paid its about my reputation as a designer. Making sure that my team and my work are in high quality will ensure that my customers are repeat. I especially having clients get a quince dress then get a prom dress and recently i had two get a wedding dress, all designed by me. My proudest moment has to be making the dress for my sister it was my first creation and that is when i realized that’s what i loved to do. I was really nervous because my entire family would be looking at the dress and my mother as well. Seeing my sister walk into the hall wearing my creation was worth everything. Throughout the years i have only mastered the art of communicating with people and really understanding what they are looking for. When creating a gown for my client, my biggest struggle was to understand that this was for them and not me, i had to realize that it was their vision, and my job was to bring to life. With time i learned how to communicate and what questions i need to ask to really get to know my client and ensure i can create their design. I realized how personal and intimate creating a gown is and how much it represents. I don’t create just gowns, i create memories. That is what i want my brand to be known for. that we create memories that will last you a life time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When family and friends visit there are a few spots in San Diego I would need to take them. For good Italian Food my favorite restaurant would have to be Arrivederci . Ristorante in Hillcrest. Its a small intimate setting with great selection of wine and delicious pasta, never a disappointment. Old Town San Diego is a great day trip to see the history of San Diego and to have margaritas and great Mexican food after walking around old town all day. one of my favorites places to go on the weekend is Ocean Beach, love the beach town vibes and walking on the pier and seeing the cliffs is a beautiful site to see. on the last day we would got to La Jolla Cove and see the seals and go to the Cave store and see the beautiful site that unique to San Diego. A night out with friend i enjoy Hillcrest, great drinks and great people especilly at flicks Mo’s and the Rail.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Success is never achieved on your own. many people contributed to my success. The first person is my mother, Sonia Naranjo, she is the one that taught me everything that has to do with running a bridal store. She was my mentor and spend many years supporting my dream in becoming a designer, by always asking the best of me. My siblings also played a huge part. My sister Catherine was always my muse, at a young age i would take her pictures and dress her up in different garments. The very first dress I ever designed was her Quinceanera gown that she wore. My Brother Jorge motivates me and encourages me to be better and to always look for ways to grow. It is his fearlessness that reminds me to not be afraid to take risk. Being a business owner himself he understands the sacrifice it takes to do what you love to do. Lastly but not least my partner in life Chris Rucker, when i decided to quit my job, he supported my decision and has been patient with me unconditionally. He has always been there when ever i need that extra support and reaffirmation that everything is going to be ok.
