Meet Melissa Popovic-Iglesias | Entrepreneur, artist & designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Popovic-Iglesias and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I used to have a fear of taking risks. For me, risks represented the act of putting yourself out there in the world. It felt like exposing a part of myself that I had been trying to keep hidden. However, I came to realize that without taking risks, I was denying myself the opportunity to showcase my God-given talents. Without embracing risks, I was merely residing within my comfort zone, often taking a back seat in life. Taking risks, whether in your personal life or your career, can be a vulnerable experience at times. But as they say, what is risk without the potential for reward?
Life should not be about clinging to comfort when you possess talents that are meant to be shared with the world. Life is not about remaining silent when you have something to say. Whenever I’ve taken a leap of faith and thrown myself wholeheartedly into something that excited me, I felt truly alive. I’ve come to understand that risk isn’t something to be feared; it’s an expression of courage and faith in oneself, a willingness to heed your instincts and go for it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I launched Culture of Good back in November 2019 with a simple, yet powerful vision: to create genuine, non-toxic candles while making a difference to communities in need. When I began this journey, I never imagined it would evolve into a full-fledged business. Initially, it was my way of escaping the 9-5 grind (which don’t get me wrong, I feel very blessed to have worked with such incredible designers and managers) while simultaneously giving back to a cause. Fast forward four years, and it has grown into offering curated home decor and interior design services. It’s amazing to look back at how it all began and witness its annual growth.
Owning a small business feels like a rollercoaster at times, with its share of ups and downs. Most days, I find myself questioning why I’m doing this, but then I remember the small yet meaningful impact I’ve made so far, and the dreamer in me pushes me forward. There have been countless moments where giving up felt like the best option, and discouragement would set in when things didn’t go as planned. I distinctly recall launching a fragrance I thought would be a hit, only to find it was a total flop! But I’m willing to take these risks until something finally sticks. Along the way, I’ve discovered my own resilience – the importance of preservation, no matter how many times I try and fail.
Ultimately, it’s not about me; it’s about the impact my talents can have on others. Every day, I strive to make a positive difference in people’s lives and share joy and inspiration through my skills. Each step I take is dedicated to this greater purpose.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My besties are in town which means hikes, wine and dancing are in order! First we’ll do a fun, semi-short hike in San Diego at Three Sister Falls. It’s 4 miles in total with beautiful views and a waterfall where we can go cliffing jumping. Afterwards, we’ll head to Oceanside for a quick bite next to the beach then drive back to OC to get ready for dinner and dancing. Dinner will be at Paragon then end the night at Old Crow for live country music!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people I have to thank for helping me become the woman I am today. To my husband, thank you for believing in me and constantly encouraging me to see myself through your lens, even through my own faults. Your support and love towards me runs deep. To my family and friends, thank you for inspiring me and holding me accountable. Lastly, I would not be here without the unwavering faith in God and breathing talent and life in me each day.
